Articulations of the tibia, patella, fibula and knee joint

Fibula articulations

1. Prodigally, the head of the fibula articulates with the lateral side of the tibia (a synovial joint) 2. Distally, the medial side or the lower end of the fibula articulates with the lateral side of the tibia (a fibrous joint) 3. The lateral malleolus articulates with the talus to form the lateral part of the ankle joint

Tibia articulations

1. The condyles of the femur articulate with the condyles of the tibia 2. Proximally, the head of the fibula articulates with the lateral aspect of the tibia just below the lateral condyle (synovila gliding joint) 3. Distally, the tibia and fibula articulate as a fibrous joint with very little movement permitted. The shafts of the tibia and fibula are connected by a heavy interpsseous membrane 4. The inner surface of the medial malleolus and the inferior articular surface of the tibia articulate with the talus to form the medial part of the ankle joint

Knee joint articulations

1. Tibiofemoral- the condyles of the femur articulate with the condyles of the tibia 2. Patellofemoral- the patella articulates with the patellar surface of the femur

The posterior surface of the patella articulates with the patellar surface of the femur
