Elastic Block Storage (EBS)

Allows you to create storage volumes and attach them to EC2 instances. (* 'Virtual Disk Storage' ) "A disk in the cloud that you attach to your EC2 instances" - Cloud Guru

C5 / C4

Compute Optimized EC2 Instance Types. Optimized for compute-intensive workloads and deliver very cost-effective high performance at a low price per compute ratio. Use Case: High performance web servers, scientific modelling, batch processing, distributed analytics, high-performance computing (HPC), machine/deep learning inference, ad serving, highly scalable multiplayer gaming, and video encoding.

Root Device Volume

EBS Volumes: The EBS volume attached to your EC2 instance, where your Linux or Windows is installed. - Contains the image used to boot the instance.

Magnetic (Standard)

EBS Volume Type: - Magnetic storage volume. - Can be used as root device volume. - Lowest cost per gigabyte of all EBS volume types (*that are bootable) - Ideal for workloads where data is accessed infrequently and the lowest storage cost is important.

General Purpose SSD (GP2)

EBS Volume Type: General purpose; Balances price and performance; Ratio of 3 IOPS per GB w/ up to 10,000 IOPS and the ability to burst up to 3000 IOPS for extended periods of time for volumes at 3334 GB and above.

Throughput Optimized HDD (ST1)

EBS Volume Type: Magnetic storage volume used for: - Big Data - Data Warehouses - Log Processing Note: Have to be 'additional' volumes. Cannot be a Root Device Volume. (can't be your c:\ drive on a windows instance)

Provisioned IOPS SSD (IO1)

EBS Volume Type: Volumes are designed to meet the needs of I/O-intensive workloads, particularly database workloads that are sensitive to storage performance and consistency in random access I/O throughput. While they are the most expensive Amazon EBS volume type per gigabyte, they provide the highest performance of any Amazon EBS volume type in a predictable manner. Can provision up to 20,000 IOPS per Volume Use Case: Use if you need more than 10,000 IOPS.

F - Field Programmable Gate Arrrays I - Input/output operations per second (IOPS) G - Graphics Instensive H - High Disk Throughput T - Lowest Cost Gen. Purpose (*think T2 Micro) D - Dense Storage R - RAM (Memory Optimized) M - Main choice for gen. purpose apps C - Compute Optimized P - Graphics (*think 'Pics' ) X - Extreme Memory

EC2 Instance Type mnemonic: F - I - G - H - T - D - R - M - C - P - X -

On Demand

EC2 Option. Allows you to pay a fixed rate by the hour (or by the second) with no commitment.

Spot

EC2 Option. Enables you to bid whatever price you want for instance capacity, providing for even greater savings if your applications have flexible start and end times.

On Demand

EC2 Option. For applications being developed or tested on Amazon EC2 for the first time.

Spot

EC2 Option. For applications that are only feasible at very low compute prices.

Spot

EC2 Option. For applications that have flexible start and end times.

Reserved

EC2 Option. For applications that require reserved capacity

On Demand

EC2 Option. For applications with short term, spiky, or unpredictable workloads that cannot be interupted.

Reserved

EC2 Option. For applications with steady state or predictable usage.

On Demand

EC2 Option. For users that want the low cost and flexibility of Amazon EC2 without any up-front payment or long-term commitment.

Spot

EC2 Option. For users with an urgent need for large amounts of additional computing capacity.

Dedicated Hosts

EC2 Option. Great for licensing which does not support multi-tenant or cloud deployments.

Dedicated Hosts

EC2 Option. Physical EC2 server dedicated for your use. Dedicated Hosts can help you reduce costs by allowing you to use your existing server-bound software licenses. Can be purchased on-demand (hourly). Can be purchased as a Reserved.

Reserved

EC2 Option. Provides you with a capacity reservation, and offer a significant discount on the hourly charge for an instance. Users can make up-front payments to reduce their total computing costs even further. 1 year or 3 year terms.

Dedicated Hosts

EC2 Option. Useful for regulatory requirements that may not support multi-tenant virtualization.

T3 / T2

Gen. Purpose EC2 Instance Type. Burstable Performance Instances that provide a baseline level of CPU performance with the ability to burst above the baseline. Use Case: Websites and web applications, development environments, build servers, code repositories, micro services, test and staging environments, and line of business applications.

M5 / M4

General Purpose EC2 Instance Types. This family provides a balance of compute, memory, and network resources, and it is a good choice for many applications. Use Case: Small and mid-size databases, data processing tasks that require additional memory, caching fleets, and for running backend servers for SAP, Microsoft SharePoint, cluster computing, and other enterprise applications.

R4 / R5

Memory Optimized EC2 Instance Types. Instances are well suited for memory intensive applications. Use Case: High performance databases, data mining & analysis, in-memory databases, distributed web scale in-memory caches, applications performing real-time processing of unstructured big data, Hadoop/Spark clusters, and other enterprise applications.
