- Must be accurate - Must be edited and looked over for mistakes - Should be one page -Should highlight your duties AND accomplishments because this shows your transferable skills - Should not include certain things so that they can get through the Applicant Tracking System (ATS) used by corporations --> ATS software will "kick-out" resumes if it cannot understand its use of formatting or font styles (avoid tables/columns, headers and footers, unusual or decorative fonts) --> File should be a word document, ATS cannot read PDFs

- Perception is reality - Keep accounts up-to-date and consistent - Engage in conversation with professionals/build your network online - Develop and/or share appropriate content - Ask colleagues for recommendation and endorsements to gain credibility

STAR

- Situation- briefly describe the situation and setting for your listener - Task- explain what you had to accomplish, overcome, or solve - Action- explain what you did and why you did it - Result- quantify or qualify your results. What were the outcomes?

Interviewing in General

- What can you negotiate for? --> Salary negotiation --> Health insurance, dental insurance, vision plan --> Life insurance --> Retirement plan --> Relocation --> Company car --> Paid parking --> Short and long term disability --> Further education funding (CPA exam, certificates) --> Stock options --> Start date --> Vacation days --> Bonuses (sign-on and performance based) - What are the strategies to use for negotiation? 1. You have an offer, thank the employer for the offer and tell them that you are excited about the opportunity. Ask for time to review the offer and consider the position before making a decision 2. Research typical salaries for the position after you have received the offer by using websites like Glassdoor, Payscale, Salary, and LinkedIn 3. Once you have done your research and planning, you can email the employer and ask to have a conversation (usually via phone) to ask a few clarifying questions regarding the offer. Usually they will say yes, and give you a time that they will call you 4. The conversation. Stay humble. This should be a win-win conversation. (I'm really excited about this opportunity and can really see myself fitting and contributing to the organization. Based on my research and experience in ___ and my education background___, I was hoping to be more in the range of ____. --> if you don't get the base salary you are looking for negotiate for the other things that are most important to you (ex. if we cannot negotiate the salary any higher, is there are a possibility to negotiate to ___?). - Once you decide, you can email or call to officially accept the offer and get the offer letter

Job search process

- What things do we look at then searching for a job/internship? - Professional development, company culture/size, opportunity for growth, geographic location, industry/strength, paid/unpaid - What do you do when you accept the job/internship? Once you have accepted a job or internship offer, let any other companies know that you've accepted and need to withdrawal you application. Reneging is very serious and harms not only your personal brand but also the brand of the Moore School and the University of South Carolina. - What are the final steps you take during your senior year after accepting the job or heading to graduate school?

Cover letter

- What's it used for? --> Cover letters give applicants the ability to relate their past experiences ot the job they are applying for. When writing a cover letter, applicants should be detailed, yet concise. It is important to tailor each cover letter to the job description - What content should be included? --> Opening paragraph - State the purpose of your letter - Mention how you learned of the opportunity- a personal referral can be mentioned here - Describe why you are interested in this employer or organization - Introduce the skills/experiences that you are going to talk about further --> Middle paragraph - Describe and sell your qualifications for the position using specific examples (skills/experiences that you have) - Customize your descriptions for each employer and tailor the experiences you highlight according to the job description --> Closing paragraph - Reiterate and highlight your purpose, strengths, and why you want to work for this particular employer - Add details about you personal characteristics or values that relate to the culture of the company - This paragraph is about next steps and professional courtesy. To close the letter, thank the reader for their time and consideration
