Basic Concepts in Anatomy and Physiology
how are anatomy and physiology linked?
You can't FUNCTION without STRUCTURE, and vise versa. It is impossible to understand physiology without developing an understanding of anatomy. physiology is explainable only in terms of the underlying anatomy.
can anatomy and physiology be studied together or separately?
both, structure predicts function as function predicts structure.
What is gross anatomy?
branch of anatomy that deals with the structure of organs and tissues that are visible to the naked eye.
more detailed definition of physiology
concerns the function of the body/ how the body parts work and carry out their life-sustaining activities.
disadvantage of gross anatomy being studied regionally
could miss the overall picture of how the systems function with one another / having to learn different parts of the systems at a different time
What major tools do histologists use to do their work?
electronic microscope and light microscope
one word definition for physiology
function
disadvantage of gross anatomy being studied systematicaly
it would be difficult to integrate the systems together (as they are all highly integrated)
What does the term "gross" mean and from what language?
means large and is german
What are the different types of tissues?
muscular, connective, epithelial, nervous
one word definition for anatomy
structure
more detailed definition of anatomy
studied the structure of body parts and their relationships to one another
what is physiology?
study of the FUNCTION of the body
what is anatomy?
study of the STRUCTURE of the body; How big something is; the geometry and shape; how it connects to the rest of the body
are we studying systematically or regionally in class?
systematically
What is histology?
the study of tissues (epithelial, connective, muscular, nervous)
How does histology directly impact the study of medicine?
tissues are a part of everything in the body so it's important to know the different types / by pathology where the physician studies a biopsy using the same histological technique (pathologist: a professional histologist)
advantage of gross anatomy being studied systematically
understand how the systems relate to one another /only having to focus on terminology and physiology of a certain part of the body
Can gross anatomy be studied regionally?
yes - by body region (ie looking at the thoracic cavity &learning/studying all aspects of it: cardio, pulmonary, the costals and intercostal musculature, the esophagus, the thymus gland, the ribs etc.)
Can gross anatomy be studied systemically?
yes - by body system (ie skeletal, muscular, digestive)
advantage of gross anatomy being studied regionally
you know location & placement / holistic picture of each portion of the body and how the systems integrate
