(Hold up teddy bear in bag) What I have in this bag before you is something that connects each and every one of you with one of our country's most famous. presidents. (Pull teddy bear out) We all have had one of these before. This teddy was named after our 26th president, Theodore Roosevelt.

Death and Legacy

On January 6, 1919, Theodore Roosevelt died of a heart and blood vessel disease called Cardiovascular Disease. Today, historians credit him for his outstanding presidency, putting character as important as the issues of our country. To meet the needs of the new century, Roosevelt bravely reshaped the office and put a national focus on the environment.

Achievements

Theodore Roosevelt had many outstanding achievements during his life. One being, he was the main constructor of the Panama Canal. Also, he received a Noble Peace prize for his international peace making skills. Not only did Theodore receive these awards, he was a participant in making 5 national parks, 51 wildlife refuges, 18 national monuments, and 150 national forests. He was known as the "Wilderness Warrior."

Birth, Heritage, & Early Childhood

Theodore Roosevelt was born on October 27, 1858. He was primarily Scottish and Scott-Irish as well as a little bit of German, Welsh and French. Theodore loved nature and was always very thoughtful to others. He was homeschooled for a majority of his childhood. Theodore Roosevelt became interested in animals and zoology at the age of seven when he saw a dead seal in a local market.

Education and Married life

Theodore first married a women by the name of Alice Hathaway Lee in 1880 but she soon died of kidney failure in 1884. Theodore married another women named Edith Roosevelt. Strong and bold, their relationship was unbearable. He got into Harvard College in 1876. Theodore went to Columbia Law School as well.

Middle Childhood Years

Theodore loved the outdoors. He even had a museum of things he collected outside, in his room on a shelf. Theodore also loved to travel. His family lived to go places. Some of these trips included Egypt and Europe. Even though he loved the outdoors, he suffered from bad asthmas attacks that were very frequent.

Jobs

Theodore was a soldier in 1898 during the Spanish-American War. When he dropped out of law school, he pursued politics. Theodore Roosevelt governed for the state of New York City in 1899 to 1900 and worked in Congress in the resources/ nature department. There, he tried to make the world a better place by starting recycling systems. He served as Vice President in 1901 for a few months. In that same year, Theodore Roosevelt was elected president of the United States.

Family

Theodore's family consisted of his mother (Mittie), his father (Theodore Roosevelt Sr.), and his brother and sister (Corine and Elliott). Theodore's mom was a southerner that lived on a plantation in Roswell, Georgia and suffered from poor health and was considered to be gentle. Theodore's dad on the other hand was a northerner with great wealth and generosity. He greatly influenced his son.
