Discuss the importance of truth telling and honesty in medicine.

Truth telling and honesty are extremely important in medicine as physicians are obligated to follow a code of ethics and to do no harm. If physicians are lying or not being honest, then they could lose their license as well as put patients in danger.

What would you do if you witnessed a coworker stealing Tylenol from Pyxis?

I would confront them about it, and let them know that I am really concerned. I would tell them that they are jeopardizing their license as well as mine. I would tell them to put it back, and that we need to sit down and talk about it. If he didn't want to listen, I would report him .

Q3: Q3: What would you have done differently

IF I were able to redo the situation, I would have tried to compromise with my group. We could potentially add a game in while we were acting it out. Or we could have simplified the cell cycle so it was easier to act out.

When an obese person is next to you on the plane

As part of the cabin crew, my job, of course, is to keep you safe, but it's also just as important to me that all of my passengers are comfortable, regardless of their class of travel, mileage-club status, or even size. So what should you do if you find yourself in this potentially awkward situation? First and foremost, I sincerely hope that your cabin crew possesses enough situational awareness to assist discreetly, without being asked, so that nobody is made to feel uncomfortable, hurt or unwelcome. Shuffling passengers around, like what happens when families get seated separately, is a routine part of our job and this is just one more circumstance in which we might have to do that. Hopefully your crew are on the ball and able to move someone, eliminating the need for anyone else to ask questions that could be potentially embarrassing. If that doesn't happen though, there are a few things you can do, regardless of which party you are. Communication is key, so talking to your cabin crew is always a good bet. Keep it discreet and have that chat in the galley — out of earshot of other passengers, so as not to offend anyone or cause someone any further discomfort — and ask if they know of any other available seats you might be able to move to. Moreover, communicating with your seatmate is also a great solution, especially if there are no other seats available. Getting to know the person next to you adds a human element to the situation, and now the person who was potentially a source of discomfort is someone you know, and therefore less likely to a be a source of frustration, discomfort, or embarrassment. The fact is airplanes are not made with people of size in mind. Rather than fight that, getting to know the person next to you will hopefully alleviate some of the awkwardness, letting you make the best of the situation. Lastly, you can always wait to get on the plane until the very end of the boarding process. If there are spare seats, you'll have an idea of where they are and can just grab one, with the hope that nobody else will be getting on the plane behind you. I realize that these are not life-changing, ground-breaking ideas. Fitting into the flying sardine cans that we now call airplanes is difficult at the best of times — add to the equation the fact that the seats are designed for one specific body type that's not at all representative of everyone who makes up the "flying public" and you have a situation that can be uncomfortable for all parties involved. It doesn't have to be, however. In my opinion, the best thing you can do is communicate both with your crew and the person sitting next to you. If another seat is found, everyone involved ends up with enough space to feel comfortable. If not, at least you've started to get to know the person you're sitting with. At the end of the day, your fellow travelers are humans — people with feelings, stories and baggage (both carry-on and emotional!) — and remembering that will help bring back some of the humanity to air travel that I think we can all agree has more than disappeared as of late.

VIDEO of car getting hit and not being able to get his DL number and girl getting madIf you saw the car again and the person...What would you do?

f I saw the car again, I would write his license plate number down and confront him in a non accusatory way about my concerns. If he did admit to hitting the car, I would encourage him to contact the police. If theyrefused then I would feel obligated to call the police and explain the situation.(look for damage on the car and then report it for further ivesticatiohn)

You prescribed a 13 year old birth control, and the pt's mother calls and is angry. What do you say?

I would first start by introducing myself to her. I would explain my reasoning and side of the story and why I felt that it was important for her daughter to be protected and what benefits that birth control can have for all women. I would ask her what questions she had, and what concerns and go from there.

Under what circumstances should underage children work

There are many different positive and negative aspects when it comes to allowing underage to work. It enables them to become more financially independent from their parents, earning a small income to pay for miscellaneous items or even investing in their education in the future. It also allows them to become more proficient in teamwork and communication skills which will be beneficial in their professional careers. However, there have specific guidelines that dictate how long and where underage children should work. Family businesses that are non-agricultural or deemed hazardous by the Secretary of Labor should not allow children to work as it creates a potentially harmful environment for the child. Agricultural business such as farming or family run businesses can employ children but have to be considerate of their educational obligations and to not impede their success in school. There should also be guidelines into the tasks or responsibilities these children can perform so it doesn't negatively impact their long-term health or educational success. By taking into these considerations, employers can promote greater well-being for their potential underage employees without compromising their responsibilities in school or otherwise. Although there may be benefits in some instances, many studies have found that work by young children or long hours of work are harmful to both their schooling and future earning potential. Many of the working children interviewed during our research reported missing school and having difficulty concentrating in school or completing their homework because of the demands of work. As a result, many perform poorly, are held back and forced to repeat grades, or drop out altogether. The principal federal law that addresses the protection of children at work is the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). This act allows for the regulation of the hours and types of work performed by individuals under the age of 16 so that their employment ''is confined to periods which will not interfere with their schooling and to conditions which will not interfere with their health and well-being" The act prohibits "oppressive child labor in commerce," which it defines as work that may be detrimental to children's health or well-being. If needing to work in family business or practices, there should be regulations and considerations in not endangering their schooling or well being. Minors younger than 14 may work for their parents (except in mining, manufacturing, or the jobs declared hazardous by the Secretary of Labor). They may also be employed in movie, radio, or theatrical businesses and to deliver newspapers. the FLSA limits the number of hours and the times of day at which work can begin and end for those under the age of 16; Under Age 14:Children under age 14 cannot work any non-agricultural jobs unless employed by their parents in a non-hazardous industry. Ages 14-15:Children ages 14-15 can only work hours when they are not in school. There are also rules about how many hours they can work each day. They can work up to 3 hours per day on a school day, and 18 hours total during a school week. They can work up to 8 hours on a non-school day, and 40 hours total during a non-school week. One exception to this is that they can work extra hours if they are working for a state-sponsored career exploration program or work-study program through the Department of Labor. Finally, there are limits on the specific hours of the day they can work. Generally, they can only work from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. However, from June 1 through Labor Day, they can work between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. Ages 16-17:There is no limit on the hours that someone age 16 or 17 can work. However, if you are under 18, you cannot work in a job that the Labor Department considers hazardous, as mentioned above. Age 18 and over:There are no limits on the hours you can work if you are 18 or older. Exceptions to Restrictions Generally speaking, age-based work restrictions don't apply to minor workers who are employed by their parents or guardians. The exception to the exception? Those hazardous industries listed above. Employees under the age of 18 cannot work in mining or manufacturing, for example, even if they would be employed by their family.

Q3: Leaders commonly generate the feeling among followers of undeserved praise and reward. Discuss why this is so and if it is a fair sentiment.

Many leaders may seem to receive underserved praise because they are the ones leading the group and as a result they receive more attention. However, they are also in the position to receive more criticism. Many people don't see leaders contributing, but leaders also provide valuable aspects to the project such as making deadlines are met and overseeing the entire project. A good leader will not only direct their team, but also provide praise where it is due. If a leader does not contribute to the group and takes all the credit then it obviously would not be very fair.

Have you witnessed acts of discrimination in your life? If so, how have you dealt with them?

Racism of a white woman against a Chinese man at a grocery store amidst the COVID-19 Pandemic. Had to really step in and intervene in the situation.

Describe a past situation in which your ethics were challenged.

A few years ago, I was taking a test at our testing center. I noticed that a guy next to me had notes which he was pretending was scratch paper. I was nervous to say something in case I was wrong...maybe it was just scratch paper. I felt that it was my responsibility to say something to someone, so I told the supervisor at the testing center. Though I don't know for certain what happened, I felt good knowing that I did what I believed was right, even though it was difficult.

Do you get frustrated or angry?

Anger to me means loss of control. I do not lose control. When I get stressed, I step back, take a deep breath, thoughtfully think through the situation and then begin to formulate a plan of action. For instance, when I am given multiple projects to complete in a short amount of time, rather than feeling frustrated, I come up with a strategy for how to complete the work in a steady, methodical manner that will not overwhelm me.

What if you have evidence (that will not hold up in court) that the person is guility. What would you do?

As the director of the law firm, I will have to act legally and ethically. The information I have regarding the client being guility may not be accurate or I could be misinformed. It is also not relevant to this specific case. At the end of the day, it is the role of the court to decide who is and is not gulity. However, I will certainly advise the authorities and have them attempt to gather evidence that could prove he is guilty. IN this instasance, I would still report the accident to the authorities because it is the correct and ethical thing to do. We must trust that the justice system will act in a approprate manner to punish those who are guilty of serious crimes. If I fail to act ethically and legally, I could lose my license, runining the reputation of the firm, and being a bad example to my student.

How would you respond to this act of cyberbullying?

I would confront the girl who posted the picture and ask if I could speak with her. Since cyberbullying is often done behind a screen, the perpetrators often feel more confident to say hurtful things. When speaking with her I would express how hurtful the post was, and if she could take it down. I would explain that I was not on a date and simply with my family. I would then listen to her side of the story. She might have really felt like it was a date and was worried about the guy. However, I would urge her not to jump to conclusions or talk to me personally before posting online. If she refused to take the picture down, then I would confront the principle of our school and explain how difficult the situation was.

You are in a surgery and the anesthesiologist starts making inappropriate comments about the patient once they are asleep. What do you do in this situation?

I would tell them that is inappropriate and to stop. Next time they did it, I would report it.

#2 Q2: Why did the group not take your suggestion?

The group felt that acting out the cell cycle would make more sense and help teach the students better.

What is your stance on the legalization of recreational marijuana?

The legalization of recreational marijuana has its benefits and consequences. If marijuana was legalized for recreational use, states could experience and economic boom. It could also potentially lead to a decrease in crime as police officials are able to focus their attention on more violeny crimes. Lastly, there is evidence shown that it can help with chronic pain. However, marijuana has harmful effects on the body and is an intoxicating and addictive drug. It can increase the risk of heart attack, blood pressure, and decrease oxygen levels. Legalization could also mean more youth getting addicted to drugs or arrested.Though there are both sides to this argument, I believe that the negatives to legalize marijuana far outweigh the positives therefore I do not agree that it should be legalized for recreational use.

If doctors were getting paid the same, regardless of hours they put in or the number of patients they have seen, would you still pursue the profession?

Though it may be unfair that doctors who work 100 plus hours a week, while another doctor was getting paidthe same only working 60 hours a week, i would still pursue medicine as a career. Becoming a physicianassistant was never about the salary or job security for me. It was about being able to help people and studymedicine, which is why I would continue to pursue a job in it.

Why do you want to pursue a job in the medical field?

Being an empathetic caregiver and despite not being able to cure every patient that I see, I can still do everything within my limits to make a meaningful difference in the lives of my patients, as I have with Peter at the nursing home.

In your experience how do you deal with uncooperative group members?

When dealing with an uncooperative group member, I always try to see from their point of view. This helps me understand where they are coming from. I will then talk to themprivately to see if anything was going on and how I could help. I would work towards obtaininga compromise and continue moving forward.

1. Should companies be forced to discount their products when there is a societal benefit?

While it may benefit the company to mantain a high price of products, it would have a higher positive outcome if the products were discounted. Since the tablets offer higher patient satisfaction and reduce error this could have a huge impact on reducing problems in the health care system. As a result, companies should discount these items so that all clinics have access to these tools that will benefit society.

Your supervising physician or fellow PA are drunk at work, what would you do?

- Tell them to go home and come back tomorrow because they are a danger to themselves and the patients.- If my supervising physician refused then i would have to report him to the medical board because it is my responsibility to ensure the safety of the pt's.- As a medical provider he or she should know better and have the maturity to not treat patients when they are intoxicated

(video) patient comes in with pain and needs to see his doctor. Yelling at the nurse who wants him to fill out paperwork. You are the physcian. What is going on in your mind right now?

First I do not want to jump to any conclusions until I gather more information. The patient could beexperiencing excruciating pain and it might be unbearable to answer questions at that moment. However, thepatient could also be addicted to pain medication and experiencing withdrawal. As a physician, I need to gainmore information so I can understand how best to help.

A friend in your class tells you his mother was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. He is overwhelmed by his studies and may drop out of the program to spend time with his mother. How do you counsel your friend?

First, I would express how sorry I was and let them know that I am always there for him.I would then tell him that I believe he should stay in the program because he has already worked so hard for this. I would tell him that our class is there for him and will help him in any way that he can and won't let him get behind.I would also remind him of why he wants to be a doctor- maybe its bc he wants to give best possible care- something that he wants his mom to have.

What quality or personality trait is most important in the PA profession?

I believe that you should look for candidates that are empathetic. While good grades and gpa are important, I think it is even more important to look for individuals who can understand patients and what they are going through. To be able to get down on their level, and put themselves in their shoes. Though we might not have gone through exactly what they are going through, we have all felt disappointed or scared (or whatever they are feeling), and apply that to the situation. I believe that great health care stems from empathy.

What would you say if you knocked on the door and someone there told you to go away and mind your own business?

I would explain my concern and why I was knocking. If they still told me to go away, then I would leave andcall the police as I do not know what the situation is. If I did not call the police, I could potentially be putting individuals in danger as well as myself.

Imagine that you witness your attending doing something that in your opinion does not fit the standard of care. How would you react?

I would take a step back and analyze the situation and try to understand the thought process of why the physician made that order-If I was still unsure I would consult the ordering physician and try to determine why he chose that treatment bc it could have been a mistake- made by me or by physician- If I know with 100% certainty that it is a mikstake, I would not follow those orders and tell the supervising physician that I am not comfortable with that

You're a pilot waiting at the airport for your next assignment. You are sitting at the bar with a colleague who is also awaiting an assignment. Your colleague gets a call informing him of his next assignment. You over hear him accept the assignment, you have observed that he has been drinking beers at the bar while waiting.#1 What is going through your mind at this point?

At this point, I need to remain objective, non-judgemental and not jump to any premature conclusions based on the primary observations made. I do not want to make the assumption that my colleague is being irresposible and unprofessional by drinking alcohol while accepting an assignment. It could very well turn out that my collegue looks like he is drinking an alcoholic drink, but it could be non- alcoholic beer. Or since I did not hear the complete conversation on the phone, it could turn out that the colleague said yes to an assignment that could be tomorrow or a few days from now. However, it could also turn out that my colleague was drinking and did accept a near assignment. Thus for these reasons, I will discuss the matter privately with my colleague in a non-accusatory manner to gain more information as I am concerned about the well being and safety of all those involved, most importantly, the potential passengers.

If a student fails a test, is it the student's fault or the teacher's fault?

I believe it is the students fault. Everyone learns differently...while the teacher may not have explained it the best to you...it could have made perfect sense to someone else.Learning is not a passive activity. You have to put in the effort and hard work, even if the teacher isn't explaining it in the best possible way. You can also always ask the teacher if they can teach it to you differently. If the teacher is unwilling to work with you, then that is a different story

Is it over okay for a professional to have a personal relationship with one of their students?

Due to the nature of the relationship between a professor and student, I believe it is not okay to have a personal relationship as it is a conflict of interest. Regardless of if you knew a stsudent beforehand, it is essentail to keep the relationship professonial during the course of the class. if it becoems personal This type of relationship can result in abuses of power creating harm to both the student and the professor. It could potentially harm and defame the university as well as hurt families involved. Due to the negative consequences, professional relationships between a professor and a student should not be allowed.

Describe a situation you have had with a difficult patient.

I once had a older-male patient who was inappropriate around the female technicians at my physical therapy clinic. I confronted my boss about it and told him my concerns and that I was uncomfortable working on him. My boss was very understanding and receptive. He was also able to talk to the patient, and make sure it didn't happen again.

(Video) You're watching tv, and you hear a huge fight going on next door, all the sudden there is a bang and then its silentWhat would you do?

I would call the police as I do not know the state of the individuals. If they were fine, and it was just the tv and I called the police then all would resolved. However, if I did not call the police and individuals were hurt, it would not only affect them but their families as well. It could also put my safety in jeopardy. As a result, it would be necessary to call the police to make sure that everything is okay. (SHOULD I KNOCK ON DOOR?)

One member of your student group, Sue, is showing up unprepared and not contributing. She blames this shortcoming on a paper she had to write, but the other members argue that they were responsible for the same paper yet still managed to show up prepared. Two other members begin confronting Sue about the problem.Question 1: You are a member of the study group and have not participated in the interaction so far, but now the group is looking to you. How would you defuse this situation?

First I do not want to jump to any conclusions. I would ask Sue if everything was okay and if anything was going on outside of class in a non- accusatory manner. Sue could be going through a difficult time that we do not know about. If this was the case then I would ask her if there was anything we could do to help her, offer campus resources that might be beneficial, and consider talking to the professor to explain the situation. If Sue said nothing was going on, but still seemed to be troubled I would talk to her privately to make sure that nothing else was really going on. If there was nothing else going on, and Sue was simply not contributing to the group then I would reestablish expectations with the group. I would collaborate with everyone and find everyone's role in the group and make sure that everyone finds it fair and agrees.By Sue not contributing the group, it affects her grades as well as the entire groups grade. It could further effect other students in the class as not all members are doing equal work.

As a witness is it your responsibility to intervene? Why or why not?

If I didn't do anything when witnessing an ethical dilemma, I would always question if my inability to act or my fear of repercussions/feeling uncomfortable could have potentially helped resolve that moment even for a second. It wouldn't have hurt to try, but there can always be some positivity out of it.

Discuss a time when someone you admired disappointed you.

In high school, having a teacher that was against underage drug abuse yet confessed he did and still uses marijuana for stress relief purposes. Hypocritical in a sense but there was a disconnect with his beliefs and his practice. I told him there are other ways to manage stress that he didn't need drugs to do it. I had no problem with him using recreational drugs but I didnt want him to teach others his beliefs but not fully practice them.

How could doctors be persuaded to work in rural areas?

In order to relieve the shortage of doctors in rural areas, the government should come up with ways to promote it. For example, a program that pays for medical school in exchange for the doctor working in rural areas. Another example could be paying physicians a higher amount in rural areas to help persuade doctors to practice there.

#2 What will you do in this situation?

In this situation I do not have all the information so it is important that I do not jump to any premature conclusions. I would talk to my colleague privately and first apologize for overhearing his conversation. Then, I would simply mention to him that I observed him drinking what appeared to be beer and that I was concerned if his next assignment was immediate. At this point, a few things could happen. He could say that his next assignment was not immediate or that he was consuming non-alcoholic beer, at which point there would be nothing to be concerned about. Alternatively, they could say that it was an honest mistake and an oversight when they accepted the assignment, and now that I brought it to their attention they will rectify the situation by cancelling their assignment. Lastly, it could turn out that my colleague is being irresponsible and dismisses my attempts to intervene. At this point, I would strongly remind him that I am concerned about everyone's safety, and if they are unwilling to talk to the supervisor then I would be obligated to do so regardless of how it would affect our relationship.

A time you navigated a personal crisis (yours or someone else's)

Me recovering from piriformis syndrome. How I thought I couldnt work out anymore or be social and do physicial activities because my back was always in pain. And even with PT i was discouraged because I wasnt seeing results quick enough as my physician had told me.

(Video) You're watching tv, and you hear a huge fight going on next door, all the sudden there is a bang and then its silent. What goes through your mind?

My first reaction would be concern about the safety of the individuals. I do not want to jump to any conclusions so I need to gain more facts. There could be a possibility that it was a movie or a tv show, however, it could also be two individuals who got into a heated argument which became dangerous. As aresult, I need to take action as to find out what is exactly going on.

1. What are some of the security issues related to the use of tablets in hospitals?

One security issue of the tablets is having all the patients information online. If anyone were to hack into the system then the patients confidentiality would be breached. Another security issue could be the wifi network that the tablets use. If the wifi network was being used inappropriately, then other individuals could have access to data that they are not allowed to have.

If group members do not own up to plaigarism

Run the paper through a plaigarism checker and see if the areas that you thought were plagiarized were indeed plagiarized. IF they were, contact the responsible individuals and see if they can remedy the issue by potentially paraphrasing the work better and using in-text citations in addition to their works cited page. If they aren't willing to do so, then I would let my team know that I wouldn't feel comfortable submitting the paper until the corrections are made. I may even have to have a private conversation with my professor in addressing the issue with/without my team members. In doing so, I don't intentionally jeopardize my academic integrity nor will my teammates.

How to Respond to an Offensive Comment at Work/Doctor's practice

She advises slowing down and thinking through what just happened. Ask yourself why you are having the emotional response that you are, and give yourself time to feel those emotions before you decide what to do. "Personally, when I've let my emotions get the best of me, I didn't get the results that I wanted," she says. Your initial goal is to make a rational decision, one that you'll feel good about later on, for how to respond. here are good reasons to speak up, such as "preserving your own sense of integrity" and "ridding the workplace of racism," notes Williams. "If you don't speak up, you're signaling that this is OK. You've essentially just given the person permission to do it again.""addressing offensive behavior in the right way in the moment can change it in the future." Managers have a responsibility (in some cases a legal one) to make sure no one feels threatened or uncomfortable at work, So ask yourself: How does this person normally react to being challenged? Are they generally self-aware? Well-intentioned? You'll also want to consider the person's authority over you and whether they're likely to penalize you for speaking up. "Your job security or personal safety may be at risk,"

Regardless of what we do in life, there will be times when we will come into a disagreement with an authority figure or superior. Describe a time when you came into conflict with an authority figure and how you dealt with it?

Shower Schedules as a caregiver. My supervisor wanted to do them by having us choose but I said that would be unfair because people could pick the less intensive or hands on patients to shower and then the harder to handle patients others would be stuck with. I tried to make it fair for everyone and that we all knew how to shower our residents so that in case one of us were missing we knew the routines. After having this private conversation with my supervisor eventually she agreed and compromised on the issue with me. eNsured a fair working dynamic.

Air Force One, the private flight service for the President of the United States, makes frequent unscheduled landings at major airports. Because of security concerns, all flights landing at or taking off from these airports are grounded in these instances. The situation often leads to several hours of flight delays for thousands of passengers.1. What guidelines should be followed to determine how often these delays should be tolerated?

The guidelines should be maintained by urgency and severity of the situation. If there is a serious situation that requires immediate attention by the president then it should be allowed whenever a situation like that arises.

In the field of medicine as a career option, there are no guaranteed. If your specialization required 10 additional years of schooling and there were no job guarantees for when you graduation, would you still pursue medicine?

Though there is no guaranteed job security after graduation, I would still pursue the specialization and thefield of medicine because it is something that I am passionate about. There are a lot of occupations that cannotguarantee security so it is best to pick something that you really want to do. Since I am passionate about healthcare and medicine then I would still pursue it as there is uncertainty in all aspects of life.

Describe one time when your boss had to confront you about an issue with your work.

When working as a supply center manager for Thermofisher, my supervisor contacted me and said that I wasn't correctly inputting and documenting when research lab supplies arrived to the Thermofisher kiosks. Instead of acting out because I thought I was doing it correctly after intensive training, I asked her if she could be with me the next time I documented the shipments. She agreed and walked me through what I was doing wrong, explaining that I was documenting the information in the wrong system. After seeing and correcting this issue, I didn't have a problem with it again and felt more comfortable addressing my supervisor with any further questions.

Views on animal testing

Products are tested on animals for three reasons: safety (this includes correct product labeling), efficacy and liability. Many products undergo animal testing for safety to meet legal requirements to identify potential hazards to humans, animals and the environment. Even non-regulated products, such as cosmetics, are commonly animal-tested for safety for the purpose of liability. (Companies do not want to market a product that could result in legal claims.) Drugs intended for human or animal use are additionally tested for efficacy (i.e., effectiveness in treating a condition or disease). This testing typically involves animal models as well. For drugs, agency approval to conduct human testing in clinical trials typically requires a company to submit the results from animal testing data and toxicity data. Animal testing is not always predictive of human health effects. The best tests for human toxicity would be conducted using humans, which is unethical. However, science has greatly advanced since the development of the methods of animal testing that are still in use today. Cell culture, molecular and computation methods (in silico methods) are now well-developed scientific tools. In vitro methods based on human cells and tissues are now being developed and evaluated for assessing toxicity. Toxicity testing, however, has not had the urgency and support of government funding programs that disease-based research has enjoyed, although this seems to have improved over the past several years. Progress has been slow, because scientists pursue work in areas where funding is available. However, as new human-based in vitro test methods become available for regulatory testing, and the results provide better protection of human health when implemented, additional funding should be allocated for the development, validation and implementation of more human-based testing methodologies. Faster and cheaper tests are needed: Many chemicals used in products today have not been tested, so their safety is largely unknown, and new chemicals and products are entering the marketplace at an ever-increasing pace. In fact, it is estimated that there is a backlog of more than 80,000 chemicals for which potential toxicity is largely unknown. The animal testing methods are slow and expensive, and safety testing using existing methods cannot keep up with the demand. The in vitro and computational methods being developed have the potential to provide faster testing. New test methods may not be cheaper initially, but should be less expensive over the long term. And as in vitro toxicity tests advance, they should show greater predictivity than the animal testing that is currently used. Perhaps the most commonly known method of animal testing for toxicity is the Draize rabbit eye test, intended to predict whether a product or chemical would cause injury to the human eye. A reversible effect to the eye from a chemical is called eye irritation (or ocular irritation), and an irreversible effect that would result in permanent eye injury is called eye corrosion (or ocular corrosion). The Draize test involves placing a small volume of the substance into one eye of each rabbit in a small group of animals (typically three to six), and then recording specific effects observed in that eye over time (typically up to 21 days). The gross nature of this test and the likelihood of pain to the animals have evoked widespread public outcry against it. Scientifically, the test has been poorly reproducible, and not always predictive of the human response. The results are subjective and variable due to human scoring of the rabbit eye injuries, variations in the test method and other factors. Progress toward replacing this animal test with alternative non-animal test methods has been slow, disorganized and subject to political influences. However, a number of in vitro ocular test methods are now available, each with specific limitations, but the strategic testing lab can usually find a combination to address most testing needs. The Draize test for skin irritancy, which was first introduced in 1944, has been used to measure the inflammatory response produced when a test substance is applied to the shaved and abraded skin of a group of rabbits, and can cause intense pain, burning and itching. (Skin is abraded by firmly pressing adhesive tape onto the animal's body and quickly stripping it off, and is repeated until several layers of skin have been removed.) The good news is that the use of this animal testing method has been largely replaced with validated alternative methods. The Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Pesticide Programs, for example, relies on data from the Local Lymph Node Assay. Additionally, in 2015, several new in vitro methods were approved by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development for in vitro skin sensitization testing. Combinations of the in vitro methods using integrated testing approaches will be needed to substitute for the animal testing. Another traditional animal toxicity test is the LD50 test, which stands for the lethal dose of a given test substance in 50% of the test's animal population. The test, performed mainly on mice and rats, is commonly used to evaluate the human health endpoint of acute oral systemic toxicity where animal subjects are force-fed oral doses of the chemical being tested. This oral systemic test is used as a general indicator of the overall relative toxicity of a substance. Many scientists claim that the oral LD50 test has little relevance to evaluating the human safety of a substance, and some agencies and international organizations have withdrawn their requirement for this type of test data. Progress toward replacing the LD50 test with alternative non-animal methods has been ongoing, but the test involves toxicity to the whole organism, and is therefore biologically complex (and difficult to replace with alternative methods

Your patient is diagnosed with Syphilis but does not want to tell his wife. What would you do?

-You respect the pt's wishes and protect his privacy-Medical provider does not impose personal belief or judgement on their patients-However, you can encourage patient to openly talk about it with partner-provide information of risks to their partner but ultimately the decision is the PT's

What are a few strategies to detect, monitor, and confront acts of cyberbullying?

A few strategies to detect acts of cyberbullying is to encourage students to speak up to their teachers or other supervisors about it when they see it. They should let individuals know the harmful effects that cyberbullying has on people, and that it is necessary to report when one has seen it. Also, it is important to confront the person that is doing the cyberbullying in person. By speaking to them one on one, it is easier to resolve conflict as well as let the other person know their feelings and concerns. If the person continues to cyberbully, then it is necessary for individuals to report it to adults who can take more serious measures.

Describe a time when you helped resolve a conflict between two friends or acquaintances?

As a medical technician, there was a time when my caregiving team was fighting over workers not pulling their slack in the workplace. The nursing home was divided into 4 sections (1-4) and it was one caregiver per section. Sections 3 and 4 had the more acute care residents and required more time and energy addressing their needs. The caregivers in sections 3 and 4 were complaining that the caregivers in sections 1 and 2 were not pulling enough slack and being lazy / sitting around when they could be helping them with their more physical duties. The caregivers in sections 1 and 2 complained that the caregivers in sections 3 and 4 took on too many duties and didn't communicate efficiently / let them do their duties which is why they were being perceived as lazy. In addressing this situation, I had a private conversation with each member individually and gained the general consensus that communication and properly delegating tasks were the biggest issues. I spoke with my HWD about getting better functioning radios to ensure better communication, as well as suggesting to rotate the caregivers per section so they all get the opportunity to share the workload. By instituting these policies, there was a lot less conflict within my team and we could focus more on the healthcare we provided.

#3 What would you do if you were the supervisor in this situation and were made aware of this situation?

As a supervisor it is important to protect the safety of everyone involved. If the employee who had been drinking came up to me and explained that it was an honest oversight and as soon as he realized it came and talked to me about it, then I would find a new pilot. I would also thank him for coming to talk to me after they realized their mistake. I would also encourage them to be more careful next time they take any assignment and make sure that they are in the right state to do so safely. If another employee came to me and told me that someone had accepted an assignment irresponsibly and were unwilling to come to me, then I would cancel their assignment and find another pilot. I would also be obligated to talk to this employee and reprimand them for potentially putting an entire aircraft of people at risk. I would say that if it happened again, then there would be severe consequences.

Describe an ethical dilemma you have faced and how you dealt with it.

Cheating in college from one of my best friends. As a UCI undergrad, I studied for my Human Physiology final exam by carefully re-reading lecture notes and mastering concepts behind complex biological mechanisms. Days before the test, one of my best friends told me he found old final exams online and wanted to share them with me. Although the course was indeed challenging, I was so close to becoming a senior Ecology and Evolutionary Biology student, and I didn't want to jeopardize my education. In a private conversation, I asked him not to use these exams while studying or share them because this would create an unfair advantage for him and others, demonstrating academic dishonesty. Due to having increased pressure on academic performance from his physician-based family, he said he needed these exams. Although I sympathized with his situation, I told him that he could study with me or utilize additional tutoring and office hours to understand the material better instead of relying on cheating. However, he remained firm on his stance and warned me not to tattletale. I was worried that my actions would damage our friendship, but I knew I had to do the right thing. The day before the final, I met with my professor privately and told her about what I had witnessed. She appreciated me coming forward and said she would handle the issue. After taking my final, my friend told me that he failed the class due to reported cheating. He scolded me and said he never wanted to see me again. Despite the repercussions I received, my integrity demonstrated consistency in my character while struggling to compromise a friendship vs. my ethics. In my life, it is essential to be always steadfast in my values, being diligent in my work to display responsibility, trustworthiness, and honesty. Integrity enables me to improve the relationships that I have in professional settings, creating a more excellent team dynamic and upholding the mission of what my team and I strive to accomplish.

What is the greatest challenge you have ever faced and what did you do to overcome it?

My APD and how i overcame my learning disability through being tenacious in studying, reading, practicing problems, and speech therapy. How it was a challenge to just say "water" correctly yet persevered.

A time when you worked with others unlike yourself

During college I was randomly assigned to a group to work on a class project with. We all got along great, but whenever we would get together to work on the project, our group would often get sidetracked because the members wanted to talk about things not related to the project. However, I really like to get projects done quickly and not procrastinate. In order to use our time wisely, I thought it would be a good idea to use the first 15 minutes to just talk and hangout before we started working on the project. I found that this strategy helped us still be able to enjoy our time together, as well as get our project completed on time.

What do you do if a patient refuses to be seen by a PA?

First off, everyone is entitled to what kind of provider they want to see. I would tell them what a PA is and that I work together with the physician to give the best possible care. I would also tell them about my education. If they still insist on seeing a physician, I would thank them for listening ot me, and have them see the physician. If the patient isn't comfortable with the provider or doesn't trust them, then we are not giving them the best possible care.

You learn that one of your patients, a 35 year old man, is positive for the HIV virus. He has not yetdeveloped AIDS. He asks you not to tell his wife because he is afraid that it would break up hismarriage. The man's wife is your patient too. What should you do?

First, I would give the patient a little time to cope with the news. He could be in shock and not thinking through the situation clearly. If he was still unwilling to tell his wife, then I would spend time strongly encouraging him to do so. I would explain the risks associated with not telling her. I would inform the man of my conflicting duties to protect the confidentiality of his testresult AND to inform his wife. This would be a way to have a dialogue with the man about theissues, and to find out his reasons for not wanting to tell his wife.Lastly, if all of those were exhausted and the patient was still unwilling to tell his wife, then I would let him know that I will have to inform her because her health poses a potentially lethal risk.

Question 3: If you were asked to establish a policy for a new store around refunds, what aspects would you take into consideration?

I would consider changing the policy to only allow purchases of 20 dollars with cash since that is the largest amount that can be refunded.I would consider trying to find a system that tracks individual's purchases so if people did lose their receipt, we are still able to find record of it. I would also implement a system where receipts could be emailed or texted to their phone so it would be easier not to lose the. These new attributes could make the policy more fair to those in a similar situation as the customer.

You work at a retail store. A customer wants to return an item for an $80.00 cash refund without a receipt, which is against the store policy. She pleads her case, explaining that she needs the money for her child's prescription. Your manager is unavailable, so as the most experienced employee, you must advise a younger salesperson and make the final decision.Question 1: What do you tell the other employee - go ahead and give the refund or abide by store policy? Justify your answer.

I would first express my apologies to her that we were unable to make the refund. As an employee I do not have the authority to override an established rule. Though this could have a negative impact on the customer, as well as her child (if she was being truthful), if I allowed the return, I would be sacrificing my job as well as being a bad example to the new employee. It could also lead to damaging the stores reputation as others might try to want the refund as well without a receipt. However, I would be as sympathetic as possible as this is something the customer obviously does not want to hear.

You are at a baseball game and the woman in front of you has a very suspicious mole that you suspect could be melanoma. What do you do?

I would make conversation with her, and politely ask if she has had that mole checked out before? If no, I would tell her why it looked suspicious to me and encourage her to get it checked out.If she was hesitant, I would strongly insist that she should (and tell her my training)

You find out that your colleague was prescribed medical marijuana. What would you do?

If the collegue was using medical marijuana, then I would encourage him to talk to the supervisor about it. Ifhe was using marijuana, there could be situations where he was not in the right state of mind to be working. However, if he refused, I would tell him that I needed to let the supervisor know of the situation as it could affect people's safety. AS a supervisor we are in charge of being alert and aware and it is my resposbility to keep that and to protect himself from others assuming something (any other medication it comes iwth risks and supervisor hsould be aware of that)

Describe a time when you used teamwork to solve a problem.

In my advanced anatomy class, we did medical case studies every few weeks. We were divided into groups, and given background information and medical history. As a group we had to figure out the diagnosis of the patient. At first, we really struggled with this, always running out of time before we could figure out what was wrong. However, as we learned to work as a team we got significantly better. We would create a google doc, divide out what each person was going to research, take turns discussing what we found out, and would go from there. Each person had a job, and we were all contributing, and we were able to figure out the diagnosis so much faster.

You are an Uber driver because you are trying to make some extra money. One night at 2am you take 3 men home who appear to be intoxicated. When you drop them off they appear to be heading to their car. What do you do?

In this situation I do not want to jump to conclusions that the individuals are all drink and are planning on driving. However I am concerned with the situation. It could very well be the fact that one of them is not drunk and was the designated driver, or that they were waiting for someone to come pick them up. Nevertheless, I cannot take the risk of not acting any further. If they are intoxicated and get behind the wheel, the are not only putting themselves in danger, but also all other drivers and pedestrians. This would further harm any families of the people involved. As a result, I would approach them non confrontationally and attempt to understand what they are doing. If I am certain that no one them will be driving then all is resolved. If I even slightly concerned that they are all drunk and are planning on driving home then I would attempt to persuade them not to and offer them a ride to their destinations. And encourage them to call Uber the next day so they can pick up their cars. If they refused I would call the police. If I let them drive intoxicated it will put everyone at risk, including my job as well as the Uber company.

What would you do?

In this situation, I need to evaluate the patient. I need to do an extensive patient background as well as figureout what the current pain is. MY first thought would be to treat him with a nonaddictive pain medication such as advil. However, If I feel he is in excruciating pain then I will prescribe medication. However, Iwould schedule a follow up to evaluate other medical options such as physical therapy or another type ofprocedure that would be able to reduce the amount of pain killers he is taking. If I feel the patient is addictedto the pain medication and does not need it with his current health state, then I would discuss the risks oftaking pain medications and encourage to try another type of treatment without fulfilling the prescription forpain medication.

You are an amusement park ride attendent. Your colleague shows up late for his shifts and smells of marijuanaWhat do you do?

In this situation, I want to remain objective as I do not want to assume that my colleague is coming to workintoxicated and is being irresponsible. It is possible that the colleague simply smells like mariujauana becausesomeone close to him was using it. However, if he was not in the right state of mind he could not only put hisjob at risk, but he could also put the safety of all the riders at risk. As a result, I would need to confront him ina non accusatory manner about my concerns. If the colleague was under the influence, I would encouragehim to tell the supervisor and that he needs to go home as to not put others in danger. If he was unwilling tolisten, then I would be obligated to tell the supervisor. If he was not using marijuana, then all is resolved and express my apologies as I was concerned for the safety of everyone.

A time you received unfair treatment or criticism

TA in high school statistics with a friend of mine who was a girl. Teacher gave me more work to do while the girl was allowed to do study hall and only had basic tasks such as cleaning the white board. Teacher said that she was on Academic probation and tried to allot more time for her studies and knew I could handle the extra responsibilities with my school load. Although appreciative of the comment, I still addressed this situation because it wouldn't be fair to me to work harder and receive the same amount of credit as she did.

In your opinion, do ends ever justify the means?

Talk about how people would perceive the differences between drug testing on rats vs humans, going through thousands of test subjects to make a cure for humanity.

1. Is it fair that the security of an important elected official such as the President of the United States take precedence over the travel plans of thousands of his/her constituents?

The President of the United States should take precedence in situations that require urgency. If not there could be negative consequences for the entire population. However, if the situation does not require immediate attention or urgency then it would be best for the President of the US to not take precedence as it can affect thousands of individuals.Although a traveler encountering this situation would obviously be frustrated and potentially believe this process isn't fair, I believe the President taking precedence is for the greater good. The President is the leader of the free nation and their well-being is often associated with the well being of America. If an act of terrorism or other violent act happens to the president, it often is interpreted as instability or turmoil in the nation overall. In order to protect anonymity and unpredictability in the President's schedule, it would be imperative to continue the practice of unscheduled stops. However, if it is matter that is more of a casual visit instead of something related to national security, the flight plan could be adjusted to land at times that an airport is less busy, thus causing the least delay to the smallest amount of people possible.

If you were given $10 million dollars what public education system issue in your community would you address?

The ratio between faculty and student. Essentially allowing for more small classroom settings so students aren't left behind or always having difficulty in learning concepts. As a teacher you want all your students to be well equipped to adequately address any problem in homework or in exams. You want them to understand concepts and apply them in different practical scenarios instead of simply memorizing and regurgitating info on an exam. If they are falling behind, in a smaller classroom with more faculty you can provide more resources and attention for these students to better grasp the curriculum.

Describe the major differences between schoolyard bullying and cyberbullying.

There are a few differences between school yard bullying and cyber bullying. First cyberbullying is often found on social media, whereas schoolyard bullying is in a public area. In cyberbullying the perpetrator is behind the comfort of their screen, and will often say things that they may not say in person. Alternatively, in schoolyard bullying individuals are forced to confront each other in person. Another difference is that schoolyard bullying tends to involve a group and is more public.

Do you think finances and friendship should go together? Why or why not?

There can be potential negative impacts when mixing finances with friendships. For starters, because they are your friend, your emotions may become entangled with the decisions you make, which can lead you to being taken advantage of by your friends. With even small monetary amounts, overtime these can accumulate into larger amounts of debt / freeloading. It can be somewhat frustrating to know that there is a lingering sense of "This person owes me" during every social outing with that person, which you don't want to have when trying to unwind. To address this situation, state early on before going out where you are going and if food is involved the price range of meals so that everyone has had a heads up to how much money to bring. You can also just bring money for yourself so that you don't feel obliged to spend on anyone who might take advantage of you. You can also be upfront with your friends about this issue and state how it makes you feel in an attempt to show them the otherwise of their money borrowing. "I value our friendship too much to get money involved. But I will support you in any other way that I can. I'll help you move/help you find a lawyer/pass your résumé along to my network." If your friend tries to guilt you into loaning them money even after you've said no, that's not a good friend, so stand firm. If your friend needs a co-signer, that's a sign that they have been deemed a financial risk by the bank or landlord. By co-signing, you're saying that if they stop making payments, you'll step in to take care of it. First, your credit score will get battered. Then, the financial institution will turn to you and demand you start paying for the loan. Going to your friend and asking them to start paying the loan again probably won't work - if they could pay it, they would be. So now you have terrible credit, and a new payment to take care of every month. How to handle it: It's best to never co-sign for a loan for a friend, ever. Again, you can offer to help in non-monetary ways. You don't need to offer an excuse for this one, but, "I'm sorry, but I'm planning on getting my own loan for a house/car/graduate school, and I need my credit report to be clean," or "My financial advisor has advised me not to, I hope you understand," should do the trick. If you do feel compelled to help, offer to lend them money instead (again, think of it as a gift) so that your credit doesn't get ruined if they fall behind. This can be especially hard when you have friends that aren't earning as much as you, or you want to share in your recent success. Treating everyone to champagne after your promotion is cool every once in a while. But paying for friends consistently - even a childhood friend that you trust completely - can create an uncomfortable power dynamic. They might feel awkward and guilty about it. You might find yourself getting to make all the decisions, since you paid. In the worst situation, they could be silently stewing about your behavior, but won't ever tell you for fear of losing a meal ticket. Or you could find yourself overspending, as you throw twice as much money at every vacation. That's unhealthy, expensive, and not the kind of nourishing friendship that deserves your time. But when it comes to bigger sums, a good friend should support you in any way they can, except financially.

Describe a time when something for which you had high expectations fell through.

Was really good at basketball and wanted to play for my local YMCA as a kid, but unfortunately broke my arm and couldnt even dribble a ball correctly for almost 2 months. I became so disheartened and hated the fact that I was clumsy enough to break my arm in the first place. However, I learned to not dwell on this mistake and through physical therapy I picked up a greater love for badminton while strengthening my left arm again.

Scope of practice questions

What is the practice of the physician? He can still prescribe medications to stabilize. Depends on area that a physician is practicing in. May have wider scope of practice / more privileges in areas that are more medically underserved. If physician couldn't get an experienced physician to do the work or if he couldn't refer the patient to a hospital that could, then the physician can do the best in his knowledge, resources, and skillsets to stabilize the patient. However, you should try to remain in your scope of practice to avoid negative repercussions of the act, not only for yourself but for your patients.

Tell me about a time that you made a mistake at work?

When I accidentally gave a customer full strength coffee when she had a heart condition and only could drink decaf. She was polite when calling back and said I think the barista made a mistake and I aplogized profusely because I should have taken her needs more into consideration despite being swamped with many customer at the time of making her order and trying to fulfill multiple orders at once. Since then, I learned to be extremely careful about focusing on one task at a time.

Have you ever been at odds with a coworker? How did you handle this?

Yes. When I was working as a caregiver, I worked with my coworker Jasmin who wasn't participating and contributing much to our team.I decided to talk to her about it, and just suggest that we switch off tasks because I was taking on all of the tasks that she hadn't been doing. She ended up taking it really well and was really nice about it. I'm glad I addressed the problem with her directly to come up with a solution.

Question 2: Assume you advise the newer employee not to give the refund, but she does anyway. Do you report this to your supervisor? Why or why not?

f the new employee gave the refund, I would confront her about the situation. I would encourage her to talk to our supervisor and explain the situation because an established rule was broken. If she would not talk to the supervisor, I would tell them. As the more experienced employee it is my obligation to let my supervisor know, if the other employee was unwilling to tell them. If I did not talk inform my supervisor of the situation, I could potentially lose my job as well as put the newer employee at risk. I could also risk defaming the store as other people might try and want exceptions.

What if you caught a student cheating?

I would talk to them first and tell them I was uncomfortable with them cheating, and encourage them to tell the professor, and if they didn't I would.I think a lot of cheating stems from lack of preparation. In college there were a lot of times in class where the material didn't come as easy to me as it did to others- I had to put a lot of work into understanding it. So I think cheating is unfair to me and the rest of the students who did prepare and study adequately. If we allow others to cheat we are only cheating them, and their future patients.

A friend who had been chronically ill wanted you to end his lifeWhat is your stance on Physician Assisted suicide ?>

Since this is such a hot topic in today's society it is important to look at both sides of the argument. On the pro side it can be helpful to eliminate unbearable pain that the terminal patient might be going through as well as giving individuals a choice and more freedom. However, on the con side it is unethical to allow someone to die before it is naturally time and violates the Hippocratic oath, devalues life, and there can be misuses of it if it becomes legal. Thus for those reasons, I do not believe in physician assisted suicide. However, if the patient is in pain I will try to make them as comfortable as possible in their last days.

There are currently increasing talks of increasing the rate at which Syrian refugees are allowed to enter Canada and the United States. Both countriesm much like their European counterparts, have had to implement measures to regulate the influx of refugees in the country. One controversial

The Syrian refugee crisis is a major concern for everyone, especially those countries who have stepped up to accept the large number of incoming refugees. The policy introduced seems to be concerned about striking a balance between humanitarian needs and security needs. Some argue that by limiting entry to families, we reduce the risk of having individuals who are a security concern from entering the country. But of course, others argue that by simply and arbitrarily excluding young, single males from entering the country we are not only acting in a discrimnatory manner, but we are also not reducing our security concerns, as anyone entering the country could potentially be a security risk. Therefore, I do not agree with such a policy and I think other steps need to be taken in order to effectively screen refugees prior to granting them entry into the country. This has to be done effectively and efficiently so that we act in a humanitarian manner without risking the safety and security of US and Canadian citizens. n\

Q1. Should Shannon's Facebook information have been shared?

The employee seems to be genuinely concerned about his colleague's career opportunity being subverted. Also, if true, he should be concerned about the general work environment. However, the manner in which it was done is unprofessional and is an invasion of Shannon's privacy. It is possible there is no correlation or there is another explanation, such as career development of the junior employee Shannon, and so it is more like spreading rumors, especially if asking other co-workers before bringing it up directly with Shannon or Steve.Shannon showed poor judgment in her post given that she knew she was FB friends with many co-workers, however, that doesn't give them the right to exasperate the situation.

PROMPT: You are waiting in line to purchase some beer at a concert and the person next to you starts chatting and mentions that she forgot her identification. She asks if you could buy liquor for her and her friend. You think they may be underage. What are some of the ethical considerations that need to be taken into account in this situation? What is your decision? What circumstances would change your decision? What if you knew the individual personally, and knew her age. Would that affect your decision?

The first ethical consideration is that she might be underage. If I bought her alcohol then I would breaking the law. This could have negative implications on her as well as me, and any family members. ANother ethical consideration would be if she was planning on giving the alcohol to anyone else who could also potentially be underage. Lastly, I do not know if they are planning on driving. If they choose to drive home intoxicated and I purchased the alcohol then I would be partly responsible. For the reasons discussed above I would not purchase her beer because there are too many variables that are unanswered. I do not know her age as well as the age of her friend. I do not know if she is planning on sharing the alcohol with anyone else or if they would drive responsibly. The only circumstances that would change the situation was potentially if it was for a friend that I knew and knew that she was over 21. I would still not purchase the alcohol if they were underage. This could have serious repercussions on them as well as me. Would even feel more guilty if something bad happened to them because of my actions.

1. Describe a situation where you have experienced a travel delay at a time that was inconvenient for you. How did you handle it?

When I was traveling, my flight had been delayed due to a problem with one of the engines. We were forced to wait 5 hours for the engine to be fixed and allowed to fly. Though it was inconvenient, the safety of the plane is what matters most. If we were to fly on time but in a plane that was not working properly, then the safety of all passengers would be threatened. It could also have extreme consequences on the airline.

4. RESIDENTS ONLY GYM

• Ask landlord for permission • YMCA • Home workout

5. BIRTH CONTROL 14 YEAR OLD ASKING, DON'T TELL MY PARENTS

• BEST INTEREST OF PATIENT • Look at laws to determine giving birth control to minor without parent consent • Sexually active • Contraception using • Safe sex • Birth control • Does not prevent STDs • Why don't you want your parents to know • GIVE PILLS IF UNDERSTANDS CONSEQUENCES AND STILL WANTS • INFO ON SAFE SEX AND BIRTH CONTROL, TIME TO THINK

15. ER PHYSICIAN DECISION 80 or young

• Before I make any decisions, I would like to gather more information on the situation regarding both patients. • Whichever patient I give the kidney to will depend on priority of who needs it sooner and will not be able to wait for the next transplant available. • I want to make sure that my decision results in the best outcomes for both parties collectively. • Expertise, not personal, who will receive it better

1. DRUNK DRIVER

• DD, one is not drunk • Getting something from car • Ask politely the situation • Persuade them • Contact authorities

2. LAW STUDENT

• Evidence may be misplaced and not destroyed • Obligated to report but ask for leniency

3. PATIENT REFUSES TREATMENT

• Tests to confirm diagnosis • Educate on consequences of doing nothing • Understand why refusing • Is patient competent • Patient has right to make own decision

6. ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE = less research to back it up5 years to live with treatment, 1 yr without, wants alternative treatment

• Which alternative medicine do you have in mind? • Expectations, what do you know • Is there a reason you don't want chemo • Respect patient decision, it's their choice

PROMPT: You see an 18 month old girl for her regular visit, which includes routine vaccines. Her mother announces that she doesn't want to have her daughter vaccinated because she has heard on television that vaccines lead to autism. What are the important questions to ask the mother? How can doctors reconcile what patients see and hear in the media with suggested medical practices? What can be done to promote effective communication in a healthcare setting? Good luck!

#1 I would ask the mother if she had other sources besides on tv where she heard that and if she has had the chance to do further research. As a parent it is ultimately their decision, but I would them my professional opinion and research on the topic.Important questions to ask the mother could be what concerns her the most and address those concerns. For example, if autism from vaccines was her biggest concern then you could explain the extensive research that has done that shows no correlation. It is important to identify each of her concerns so can feel reassured to get vaccines. #2 As a physician, they should be honest but caring when they approach these patients. It is important to recognize that what they hear in the media can be very scary as a parent, and understand that they just want to do what is best for their children. After expressing this then it is my job as a medical professional to present the most up to date research on the subject and scientific evidence encourage their decision based on that. It is also my duty to present the benefits of vaccines and any potential risks. #3 Effective communication should be delivered from the physicians to their patients. It would be especially helpful if providers educated their patients on proper and preventative healthcare while also treating them. Social media could also help educate as that is used so frequently in society.

STEPS TO ANSWER

1) REMAIN OBJECTIVE, NON-JUDGMENTAL, DO NOT JUMP TO CONCLUSIONS 2) Private convo to gather all of the facts, NON-ACCUSATORY OR RUDE MANNER 3) Concern for wellbeing and safety of all involved 4) I will act accordingly based on the evidence 5) No further action OR I'm obligated to report to authorities 6) The decision I make will solely be based on the evidence and my expertise, and not based on personal backgrounds 7) Consult colleagues, supervisor, literature 8) Those involved

Would you report your colleague to a disciplinary council?

As a healthcare professional, it is my obligation to act ethically and responsibly. As a result, I would talk tothe colleague first and encourage him to tell the supervisor and stop his behavior and explain the consequences. If not, then I would refer him to a disciplinary council regardless of the impact it could have on our relationship.

If a patient was taking a placebo (and it was helping) what would you do? Tell her it was a placebo?

As a physician, we are trained in evidence based medicine and we are obligated to be honest with our patients. If the treatment was a placebo, then I would let the patient know and encourage another treatmentthat does have evidence to support it.

video that shows that the doctor is using a pharm company in exchange for rewards and vacation time. What would you do as an office administrator?

As an office administrator, I would confront the physician and try to get more information. Since this could be a misunderstanding it is important to gain all the facts as this could be aconflict of interest of all of those involved. If the physician was receiving gifts from a pharm. company than that couldput the entire clinic at risk and ruin the reputation, as well as put people's jobs at risk. If the physician was indeed doing that, I would report it and encourage him to stop.

Describe a situation when you had a conflict with someone. How did you resolve it?

At work we were trying to come up with a new filing and organizational system for our patients. My supervisor had an idea that she thought would be best, but I had my concerns and did not fully agree with her. I decided to approach her privately and ask her more about her approach so I could gain a better understanding of why she thought her idea would be best. I explained my rationale for my concerns and a few suggestions I had. As a result, we were able to come up with a new and improved filing system through our collaboration and communication.

Describe a time in your life when you had to tell someone a hard truth. What did you learn from the experience?

Breaking down end of life and preparing a family for the resident's passing. Something that as a healthcare provider you hate doing but in caring for patients, youre also providing compassionate healthcare for their loved ones as well. Instructed them on the signs to look out for and how the transition will play out. Its a sad time, but I feel not as bad knowing I did everything in my power to provide the best form of healthcare I could.

PROMPT: You and your friend Sarah are walking down the street on your way home from a tough day of university classes. Sarah is complaining angrily to you about a particular professor and his teaching methodology. Furthermore, Sarah is threatening to submit a formal complaint about the professor to the university administration to initiate disciplinary action for his teaching style. You happen to enjoy the professor's way of teaching. Given your opinion about the professor, how will you counsel Sarah about her desire to submit a complaint to the university administration? If Sarah's submission of the complaint would lead to a permanent blemish on the professor's record, would you change your answer to question 1? Why or why not? Describe a time when you had to make a difficult decision.

First I would tell Sarah that I am sorry she is having a difficult time with the professor. Then I would tell her that everyone learns and teaches differently and that rather than submitting a complaint that she should discuss her problems with her professor. Perhaps the professor could teach her in a different style that was more helpful to how she learns. I would encourage her to express her thoughts to the professor before complaining because the professors want their students to succeed. It would not change my answer. I would first encourage her to discuss any issues she was having with the professor. Then the professor could have a chance to help her in the course, and help her learn the material that she was having difficulties with. However, if the teacher was completely unwilling to help her then I would understand why she wanted to discuss it with the university. If the professor is unwilling to help them and other students were feeling the same way, then it might be a good idea to bring it up to the university. When I was in college I had to make a decision of whether I should quit my job or focus on being an undergraduate research student. As a barista, I loved working and how I became proficient in communicating with customers and coworkers and loved making specialty coffee drinks, but it did take away time from the research I was very eager to join. Although I loved my job, I realized that research is more important as it would help me gain valuable skills in experimentation and data analysis for a medical school career. When making a difficult decision, it is important to look at both sides and evaluate which would be best in the long run.

8. JEHOVA'S WITNESSPatient unconscious, 18 yr old, needs blood transfusionJEHOVA'S WITNESS IS AGAINST BLOOD TRANSFUSIONS!!!

How recently was card signed • Recently = closer to current state of mind• Competent when signed? • Understand what refusing treatment would mean • Respect patient decision, it's their choice • Giving transfusion goes against informed request • Respect their wishes

Should it be the patients or the doctor's right to make the decison?

I believe that it should be both the doctor and the patients decision. As the doctor, they should talk about the patient's concerns to see if they can work it out.should as they know the patients history and have been trained medically. Though itis important to respect a patients wishes, patients can sometimes make rash decisions when in pain ordepressed which often happens with a terminal illness. As a result, I believe it is best to have a doctor make adescion based on all the evidence and the patients wishes. However, if the patient still decides that they want it then they could find a doctor who will do it.

Q2: Do you feel it would attract a greater percentage of those who truly wished to, "help people"? Would this ultimately benefit the profession and society?

I believe that physicians will not enjoy their profession if they only care about income or prestige. The years of training and cost required to be a physician would not be worth it to them. Physicians should truly have a desire to help people. If more physicians had this innate desire, then it would definitely help society. However, I also believe that people should be rewarded for their hard work. As a result, I do not think the answer is paying doctors less as Certainly I encounter many medical school hopefuls who don't strike me as interested in helping others as I believe is ideal, and I imagine some get through and become doctors. Decreasing their numbers would be a beneficial effect of reducing their income, which I believe would happen. However, I think the majority of physicians genuinely care about their patients and serving their community, even if their professional demeanor or responsibilities don't make it obvious. They should be well compensated because they are not only providing a critical service, but devoted significant time to their training and pursuit of excellence. Not rewarding excellence, especially in service, is poor policy—even you attract top talent because of their altruistic nature, it will grind them down slowly, not allowing them to perform their best, and partially wasting their potential. Also you will eventually diminish the pool of talent wanted to enter the profession, as prestige and income are natural considerations to anyone, particularly high achievers. So on balance I would say the status quo is still preferable to the alternative suggested. That said, it is true that excellent doctors are disproportionately paid compared to excellent teachers or other honorable professions. We should be finding ways to increase their pay, not reducing doctors' salaries.

What quality or personality trait is most important in medicine?

I believe that you should look for candidates that are empathetic. While good grades and gpa are important, I think it is even more important to look for individuals who can understand patients and what they are going through. To be able to get down on their level, and put themselves in their shoes. Though we might not have gone through exactly what they are going through, we have all felt disappointed or scared (or whatever they are feeling), and apply that to the situation. I believe that great health care stems from empathy.

Q2. Even if the rumor is unfounded, finding out the truth could be destructive to Steve and Shannon's career. How would you advise the lead author?

I would advise the lead author to approach Steve and Shannon privately. I would remain nonjudgemental as I do not know all of the information. I would explain the concerns I had as well as how it comes across on social media. If they were in a relationship then I would advise them to report it to their supervisor as this could be a conflict of interest. If they were having a relationship then it could have a negative impact on other employees, as well as defame the company and ruin the work environment. If there was no relationship going on, then I would encourage them to delete any pictures as they do not want to give a a wrong idea and discuss it with employees who are concerned.

What would you do if this was your colleague doing it?

I would confront the colleague and explain my concern. This could have serious consequences for allemployees at the company as this is a conflict of interest. It could also lead to defaming the company and thephysicians could lose their licenses. As a result, I would encourage them to stop their behavior. If they did not, I would feel obligated to do so.

PROMPT: The law firm you work for has a Facebook page, and one of your clients "likes" the page, allowing her to post on the page's wall. She then posts what you think is private information about her divorce settlement for public viewing. How would you contact her and what would you like to know from her? Who decides what to post in this situation? The client or the firm? What benefits in the medical field could be gained by social media use?

I would contact my client and see if we could talk in person privately. I would explain the risks of posting private information about the divorce on Facebook and encourage her to take the information down as it could have serious consequences. If the client refuses, then I would tell her that our Facebook will delete it as that is private information. If I did nothing there is a risk that it will defame the company as well as hurt the individuals and families involved in the divorce. (law firm, dont want to post confidential info to the public) Since it is the law firm's Facebook page then they should be able to decide what is posted on it and be able to monitor what is posted on it. However, they should realize that it is a public forum and so they should be aware of the risks. As a result, the law firm should make clients aware of the risks of posting private information on the Facebook page and discourage it if possible and explain that the purpose of the page is to advertise and market the firm, not to expose any private or confidential info. There could be many benefits in the medical field due to social media. For example, there could be more information on the benefits of receiving preventative care as well as teaching more people about proper healthcare in general. There could be seasonal posts that encourage vaccinations or videos on how to wash your hands properly. Also, social media could also be used to help spread information and newest updates on diseases or illnesses and what symptoms to be aware of. These ideas could help eliminate certain illnesses or diseases.

PROMPT: You are a professor teaching organic chemistry to first year students at a prestigious university. Throughout the year you notice that Sally is consistently late for class, and often times is missing altogether. A few days prior to a major exam you pass by Sally in the hallway and decide to ask the cause of her behaviour. She confides in you that adjustment from high school to university has been difficult for her and asks for an extension on the exam. What do you do? What services do you think that universities should offer students experiencing difficulties transitioning from high school? Considering that individuals learn using different methods and at various paces, should universities consider offering exams in different mediums (for example, written, oral or via demonstration where applicable)?

I would first express gratitude that she shared that with me and let her know how difficult the transition could be. I would explain that though I could not give her an extension on the exam, I would help her. I would suggest for her to come by my office and we could go over anything that she was having trouble with before the exam. After she takes the exam, we could also go over what she missed together. Lastly, I would suggest different campus resources that could help with her adjustment from high school to college. If I allowed the extension, then that would be unfair to other students who might be going through something similar. There should be a counceling service for students on campus that individuals could go to if they are having a difficult time. There should also be a program that helps freshman adjust such as a mentoring program where older students can help them with the transition. On campus housing RAs could be another resource available to them. Mention FSSP and how it helped me adjust with RA's and more senior students available to help me. Since everyone does learn differently, I think it would be beneficial for universities to use variety of methods testing material. For example, a course could do a combination of a written, oral, etc. exams so that students are graded on a wholistic scale. This could prepare students for professional life because they would learn how to communicate their knowledge through different mediums.

What if you had a patient that wanted to try a homeopathic remedy for her pains and aches that you have seen no evidence that it actually helps. there are no negative side effects. What do you tell her?

I would praise her for taking her health into her own hands and trying to find something that works for her. I would explain that I have been trained in evidence based medicine, and I have not found any research that supports homeopathic treatment, but that does not mean it cannot be helpful. . As a physician, I would encourage her to try something that does have evidence to help her aches, but if she was unwilling then I would support her decision to try homeopathic methods. I would schedule a follow upmeeting to see how it is going, and do additional research on her methods.

Q1: Imagine that doctors had the same duties and training requirements as current day, but enjoyed the prestige and take-home income of a high school teacher. Would you still be pursuing medicine?

I would still pursue medicine as it is something that I am passionate about. Becoming a physician has never been about the money, prestige, or job security for me. I want to help others, and support them on their road to recovery. For these reasons I would still pursue medicine.

PROMPT: You are working at an electronics store, Excellent Buy Electronics, and helping a customer choose a television. The man is insulting his female partner - telling her that she is stupid and never does anything right and he is getting fed up. His voice rises and the other customers in the store hear this.

If I felt the situation was safe enough and would not cause additional hostility, then I would try to approach the individuals privately and ask if everything was okay and express my concern to diffuse the situation. If they were simply having an argument then I would ask that they take it outside as to not disrupt the establishment. However, if I felt like there was something else going on such as abuse and a person was in any danger then I would call the authorities to do further investigation. If they simply would not leave the store, and were coming more hostile towards each other then I would get my manager who oversees the safety of the store who may potentially call the police. However, if I felt like intervening could cause more violence and hostility in the store, then I would call my manager and the authorities and let them complete further investigation as I do not want to leave the couple in harm. It is necessary to report a situation like this when you feel like either of the individuals are unsafe or are causing others to feel unsafe. One should report it to the police as well as the manager. Even if you are unsure, it would be best to call the police to further investigate the situation. I would do this immediately as I do not want to put anyone in harm.

If a patient was seeing success with something that you have not seen any evidence that it works what would you tell them?

If a patient was seeing success with a treatment that I did not believe was effective, I would be happy that they have found something that works for them and will do additional research with it. I would then encourage additional treatment with something that has evidence to back it up as well. However, if I knew of potential harmful side effects of their homeopathic medication then I would encourage them to not take it anymore.

What if you told your supervisor and he told you not to get involved

If he advises me not to get involved, then I would explain my obligation as a parking attendant to ensuresafety of all vehicles in the lot. I would tell him that I am going to call the police about the situation as this notonly could affect our jobs as well as the companies, but it also affects the individual who had her car hit andthe individual who hit her car.

SUpervisor fires you and gives you no reason

If the supervisor fires me, I would confront him. I would try to ask why I was being fired. If he would notgive me any sort of reason. If my previous history had been good and no warnings then then I would report my case as a wrongful firing.

PROMPT: A doctor is managing a 70-year old gentleman with severe dementia, and she has been in direct communication with the patient's family. The doctor is becoming frustrated with the family for not helping to remind the patient to take his prescription medication, which will help alleviate his symptoms. The family is upset with the doctor for being irritated with them because, as they see it, they do all they can for their father, given their other professional and personal responsibilities. How could this situation have been avoided? What are the steps of conflict resolution? When does a doctor ask for help in a situation like this? Who can she turn to?

In order to avoid this situation from happening the physician could do a few things. First, it would be necessary to sit down with the family members in person, if possible, and explain how demanding this position can be. Next, I would explain their roles and make sure that everyone is okay with what they need to do. If they feel like they cannot take care on this man, then it might be necessary to obtain at home care. If they are okay with their duties, then I would express the importance of his medication and come up with ways that they can remember such as putting it next to their bed or setting an alarm on their phone so they can remember to give him his medication. Lastly I would express gratitude to them. The steps of conflict resolution is to first understand where the others are coming from and try to see the problem from their point of view. Afterwards, it is necessary to talk to them in a kind manner and gather all the information and to really listen to their personal situations. Next, they can provide their rationale for how they are feeling and can collaborate together to come up with a better solution that would better fit the needs of both parties. In a situation where the physician knows that someone is not being cared for and the family does not seem to show resolve to improve then this could potentially be a case of neglect. As a result it would be necessary to report this to my supervisor so they can decide what the next level of action is and if the police can take it under further investigation.

PROMPT: In December 2013, just days before Christmas, the North American ice storm left over one million residents without power. In Canada, the City of Toronto was one of the hardest hit by the ice storm. At one point, over 300,000 Toronto residents were without electricity and heat. Many were without power for 24-72 hours, and it took until the New Year for power to be restored to all residents. In your opinion, how should a city prepare for a natural disaster? What steps would you take to prepare yourself for an emergency situation? During natural disasters do healthcare professionals have a duty to the public (for example, working extra hours in potentially dangerous situations)? Good luck!

In order to prepare for a natural disaster a city should do a few things. First the city should set up refugee sites where individuals can go if their home is destroyed or will be hit. These refugee sites will be filled with beds, food, and clean water. Second the city should have an emergency food storage so when disaster strikes, grocery stores aren't left with nothing. Lastly, they should have an emergency fund so they can plan for recovery. And ample sources of alternative power systems like generators and solar panels In order to prepare for an emergency myself it is necessary to create emergency backpacks and kits. These backpacks are filled with essentials like water, food, flashlights, and medications. Families can make these for each member of their family so that if a disaster happens they can have these. Lastly, individuals should have food storage stocked with essentials so if they are stuck indoors they can have necessary supplies. Also individuals should have battery operated emergency radios so that if power goes out they can still have access to weather traffic and emergency notifications. Health professionals have an obligation to use their knowledge and education to help those in need, especially during natural disasters. If that means working extra hours or in potentially dangerous situations, then they should do so. However, it is important for physicians to be smart about where they go as to not put themselves in danger. By creating a pre-made plan for physicians that assigns them to areas that will be affected during these times it would benefit society as they can help those recover.

Q1: Recall a situation where someone else's work or excellence benefited you, either undeservedly or disproportionately.

When I was in college, I worked on an advertising campaign. My role was to identify a strategy and direction, and then hand those ideas off to the creative group. The creative group would then execute those ideas graphically on an advertisement. At the end of the project, I presented the whole campaign to the company. The company loved the graphics, and praised me for them. However, the graphics were the product of the creative team.

PROMPT: You are a university student and you are writing a final exam when you notice the student sitting in front of you glancing repeatedly at his neighbor's paper without them noticing. The proctors fail to notice as well. What would you do in this situation? How would your answer be affected if you know that the neighbor was intentionally allowing the student to look at his exam? What do you think would be an effective method of reducing cheating among university students?

In this situation I would feel obligated to let the test proctors know of the student that was cheating. Even if they investigated further and found out the student was not cheating it would be better to let them know. If I did not, I would be allowing cheating which could potentially hurt me as I would be accountable for not reporting it. Cheating hurts the other students since the exam is no longer fair. Cheating also can ruin a university's reputation. Thus, I would let the supervisors know. I would still confront the test proctors and let them know of the situation. In this case, two students would be cheating. If I did not report it then I could potentially be in trouble by allowing it and it would not be fair to the other students as well as defame the university or school. Thus my response would still be the same to let the proctors know that two people were cheating. An effective method would be for a university to have a clear stance and clearly defined consequences on cheating, and let students know that they do not condone it an any manner (whether the cheating is students not reporting it when they see it or when students actually do it). Also testing centers should use proper techniques to ensure there is no cheating like having a rule on cell phones, separating the desks far apart, and having several test proctors monitoring the situation.

PROMPT: A family member is acting as an interpreter as you get consent for a procedure for your patient. You are suspicious that the interpreter is not fully translating what you are saying with respect to the risks involved. How would you ensure that your patient is able to give an informed consent? What potential issues could arise if a family member is acting as a communicator? How would this situation proceed if instead a paid translator, who has no relation to the family, were used?

In this situation, I do not want to jump to any conclusions that the family member is not interpreting correctly. However, if I did not do anything I could potentially be putting the patient at risk. As a result, I would ensure that my patient is obtaining informed consent by finding another interpreter at the hospital who is not related to the patient to ensure that he is getting all the correct information. There are many potential issues that could arise if a family member is acting as a communicator because it could become a conflict of interest. The family member may not want to pay for the surgery and is telling false risks of the procedure. Or the family member could be trying to persuade them to do a procedure for a personal gain, even if it is not in the patients best interest. There could also be a chance that a family member does not want to share all the risks as to not scare them or make them upset. As a result of this conflict of interest it would be best to use an additional interpreter in this situation to make sure that the patient is able to give informed consent. If a paid translator was used then that would eliminate any conflict of interest. As a result, the patient would be able to receive informed consent with no other bias. The patient would then be able to make a logical decision on the proposed treatment

Are you a leader or a follower?

It depends on the situation. If I feel confident and knowledgeable in the subject, then yes I will take lead. But, if I know someone else is more qualified than myself, then I have no problem with stepping back. People have told me that they enjoy having me as a leader because I consider everyone's opinions. For instance, as the co-organizer of Wildcats Walk for Wellness, a community wide suicide awareness walk and fundraising event, I held meetings with my team every week where I encouraged others to express ideas and concerns to improve our event. Then we all discussed each suggestion together. By promoting team effort, listening, and gathering different perspectives we were able to make a strong impact on the community. As a leader, I always strive to encourage others to contribute and voice their opinions.

Q1. The doctor violated patient confidentiality. How would you characterize the seriousness of it?

It is evident that the doctor is concerned for her patient. However, as a physician it is required to maintain a patient's privacy and confidentiality. I would characterize the seriousness of it by finding out if this has been a problem in the past, and if she continues to do it. Also, if the doctor had a personal rather than professional relationship with the patient. Thus, it is important to gain all the facts before characterizing the seriousness of the situation. Of course any violation of privacy should be avoided if possible, but this seems like general advice to get more involved in a loved one's well-being. It was a minimal invasion of privacy for potentially a large benefit to the patient's future health. The doctor is also a family friend, and so is understandably invested in trying to do what's best for the patient while respecting his privacy rights. The fact that the doctor gave this advice before the onset of any symptoms perhaps even alleviates her duty towards privacy because she's not advocating any care yet. If she had waited until he began exhibiting symptoms, this would feel more invasive, as it may need to be addressed immediately with less tact.

Describe a situation when you had a conflict with someone. How did you resolve it?

My supervisor trying to cut staff to maintain costs but I disagreed and said we need the staff to accommodate the influx of patients the nursing home is receiving. We wouldnt be providing them the care they expected and was promoted by the company.

Q3. Social media has changed how we separate private and professional life. How should a healthy workplace and fairness be balanced with reputation and privacy?

The role of social media often blurs the lines between professional and private life. To ensure a healthy work place, I would encourage employees to be mature and professional in what they post as it reflects on who they are. It could also have a negative impact in the work place if they are choosing to be unprofessional or irresponsible. Social media has provided more information and lowered barriers between our personal and professional lives, however the basic values remain the same. Information acquired outside of normal channels, such as a seeing a colleague in a public place, still elicit a duty of care to look into the matter if concerning. Fairness and a healthy workplace are ultimately more important, but can usually be maintained without excessive invasion of privacy. Any investigation should be done as discreetly as possible, with the minimum number of parties involved. However, one thing that social media may have changed is the need to then agree on and distribute messaging to colleagues who may have heard rumors but no satisfactory explanation. This may also mean more management involved depending on the issue, from their individual managers to HR, to maybe even PR. This is important to keep the trust of all in the workplace, but even then should be kept to the smallest group affected, and can often be done word-of-mouth only.

What are the hardships of working in rural areas?

There can be many hardships associated with wroking in rural areas. First, individuals might have limited knowledge on healthcare and preventative care since there is not as many doctors. An underserved area also means that the individuals could potentially be in a lower socioeconomic status and might have lower levels of education.. There could also be socioeconmic strains to be able to receive healthcare.benefits- get to know your patients, be able to have busier days, small town pace

Q3. What if doctors took this stance with all patients and not just friends? Weigh the potential benefits of earlier preventative care and support together with better final outcomes and reduced hospital visits against absolute privacy.

There could be many benefits of this. Physicians would be able to make sure that family members are taking adequate care of the patient. They also could encourage them to bring the patient in or what to watch out for. This could be helpful in treating the patient earlier rather than later. However, this would disrupt a patients rights. The family may not have the best interest in mind for the patient which could become a conflict of interest. The patient also might rather have in home care rather than burdening or worrying family members. Thus for these reasons, physicians should retain their patient's privacy while also encouraging a support system and preventative care for the patient. Much strain on the health care system could no doubt be alleviated if families were more informed and involved, providing gentle, informed influence to enhance outcomes and quality of life. Less hospitalization, efficient pooling of resources, and just more human contact are benefits to both the patient, their family, and the taxpayers/policy holders. Embarrassment, autonomy, and dignity are all issues to consider from the patient's point of view. Privacy and the right to decide our own care is prized very highly in our culture, even if it means less efficiency. We must remember that freedom in general often comes at the cost of efficiency, and if we as a society are willing to make that tradeoff for this case, I can respect and agree with it. Building awareness that patients should consider volunteering information to an extended support network early on without embarrassment is key for everyone involved, and could be conducted while respecting the rules of our current practice. Physicians proactively encouraging this is also important, as they are the trusted authority dispensing advice.

Q3: Is there necessarily a divide between high achievers and the truly service minded?

There is not necessarily a divide, as a person can be a high achiever and want to help others. It is not black and white. If a physician wants a medical license solely for the prestige and income, then there would be a divide as they do not wish to help people. However, i believe people can have both. I don't believe so. I think the pressure and competitiveness to become a doctor may allow certain more aggressive personalities to succeed, but that can be a positive thing if that is directed toward being an excellent doctor. If their original motivation was more towards service than status or salary I don't think there is any fundamental contradiction.

"The doctor should be opaque to his patients and, like a mirror, should show them nothing but what is shown to him."What does this quote mean to you?

This quote means that physicians and other healthcare providers need to be completely honest with their patients, and not withhold any information. The physician should do their best to also not give any false or misleading information, only that which is true and evident. It also explains that physicians should not use any personal bias to interfere with their professional and researched recommendation.

Q2: Did you attempt to clarify or rectify the situation?

Though it was my strategy, it is important to give credit to those who also worked on the campaign. I explained that the creative team executed and created the graphics, and did an excellent job of implementing the strategy creatively. As a result, the creative team was able to receive the praise they deserved on the project.

How does having a conflict with an authority figure differ from having a conflict with one of your peers?

Whether it is a conflict between a peer or an authority figure, you should deal with it the same by acting professionally and communicating. By understanding why they feel a certain way, individuals can work to resolve conflict because they are putting themselves in the other persons shoes. In each a individual should approach the conflict with humility and desire to learn.listen to them,' resipectful, not blame. professional use these skills for eitherIt could potentialy differ with an authority figure to a higher degree because of the relationship, but the concepts remain the same

Q3. Grades are immensely important to students aiming to get into competitive programs. What does it say that positive team-centric attitudes could potentially be heavily penalized in the supposed ivory tower of academics?

While many academic assignments are based on individual abilities, it is necessary for individuals to be able to work as a team. Many jobs require you to work with others so that is an essential skill that should be learned. Though it is necessary to be competent individually, team work abilities should not be penalized as this is a critical behavior that is used in the work force. It helps us learn from others, how to solve conflict, and rely on each other.

"We should never engage in conflict." Do you agree or disagree with this statement?

While some conflict is unnecessary, I do not agree that no one should engage in conflict. Without conflict individuals would never be able to learn how to compromise or how to work together. Though conflict can be difficult it is needed to help us grow as we learn from other people who are not like us. Additionally, if individuals never address conflict at the time it occurs then it could lead to people bottling up their emotions and cause destructive situations when eventually discussed.

How do you handle conflict?

With all conflict i stop and try to assess the situation, take an objective stance and do not try to personalize the issue. I handle conflict by hearing all sides of the story and making a collective decision with all the individuals involved. I will first have private conversations to rule out other possible issues needed to be addressed. After clarifications, I will set up a meeting with everyone where all issues can be discussed respectfully. As a mediator, I will help choose the fairest solution for all parties to alleviate any tensions and maintain a safe and welcoming team environment.

What new policy changes

free immigration- influx, dangerous, overpopulationresources into preventing free immigration and putting more resources who are fair and easy to become citizens and focus on the people here (in the US) andputting resources into making the process easier and protecting borders

You are about to leave for the day and realize that you gave a patient medicine they are allergic to. What do you do?

- contact patient immediately and explain the situation-tell patient to stop taking medicationA) if the patient has taken already, provide him information and schedule a follow up with patient asap-notify the healthcare team of the mistake-notify the hospital or clinic safety committee of mistake- document the mistake and follow up with patient the day after- learn from this mistake and be more careful next time

VIDEO: Shows nursing students talking about a new rule that was announced saying that they had to spend 6 months working in rural areas before they could go anywhere else. What are your thoughts?

I would first realize that I do not have all the facts, and before I jump to any conclusion I need to gather all the information. First off, the information that the girl heard could be false or a misunderstanding. They might give students an option where they pay students to practice in rural areas, but it is not mandatory. If I do find out its true and I have gathered all the information from an administrator, then I would express my concerns if I still had them. Ultimately, I would have to decide with my family if the new issue fits into my current plants.

How would you handle the situation if the student did not respond to one of your initial attempts to resolve the problem?

If the student did not respond to any initial attempts to stop the flirting or being inappropriate then I would report the incident to the supervisor and go from there. A solution could be to place the student in another class and maintain close supervision so this situation does not happen again.

Describe a time when something inappropriate was posted on social media and how you responded.

A story about a friend posting defamation of police station on FB. How he felt it was right because of the history of police brutality in his family because he is black. Although I sympathized with him and felt so sorry that he and his family were treated way, I had to tell him in private that doing so might seem like an outlet to him at that moment, but the repercussions of his actions could negatively impact him later. Issues with him getting into universities / professional occupations and how this message will affect not only him but his family and the many who view and share this on social media. There are other ways to voice your opinion (peaceful protests, city hall demonstrations, etc.) but defaming city property is not one you should willingly participate in. He took down the photo and issued an apology to the city but advocated for more advanced policies and considerations in how police are trained to recognize and pacify situations

#1 Recall a group situation when the group did not do what you wanted.

During college I was a part of a group project where we were required to teach information on the cell cycle to the rest of the class in a creative way. While I thought it would be a good idea to play a game of jeapordy with the class, the rest of my group members wanted to act it out. Though I expressed my hesitancies about the difficulty of acting it out, the rest of my group thought that was the best way to convey the information. I went along with the group and did my best to act out the topic and teach it to the class.

time you failed and how you handled failure

During my undergraduate experience, I took anatomy. On my first test in the course, I failed. I was extremely discouraged and frustrated. However, I realized that I could either continue to feel down about the difficult course or the experience could fuel my desire to work hard and do better on the next test. For the next month, I met with my teacher regulary to go over concepts that were difficult for me. I also made a rigorous study schedule so that I could give myself proper time to study for the class. For the second test, I received a much higher grade. This experience taught me that there will always be times when we fail. It is what we choose to do after that will affect the future. The only thing we can do is move forward and try to do better next time.

What does cultural competency mean to you?

Cultural competence is the ability to understand, communicate with and effectively interact with people across cultures. Cultural competence encompasses. being aware of one's own world view. developing positive attitudes towards cultural differences. gaining knowledge of different cultural practices and world views Cultural competency means that I have a well-rounded / global view of people from diverse backgrounds, cultures, creeds, and ethnicities. With this, it means I can be more flexible / better relate or understand the needs of these people that I would converse with every day in a professional environment. In my experiences in healthcare especially volunteering as a Hoag Health Scholar, I addressed the needs with many diverse patients there, and even if their views were different than mine, I still took their needs into consideration with the healthcare I provided. This ensured that there was no miscommunication or discrimination towards my patients.

Imagine that you diagnose an elderly patient with a life threatening condition that requires overnight observation. The patient refuses to be treated. However, the patient's son tells you that the patient has dementia and is incapable of understanding the diagnosis or making medical decisions. The son wants you to admit the patient to the hospital against the patient's wishes. What do you do?

I would discuss the patient with the physician and determine whether they have the capacity to make decisions; pts have the right to refuse but generally only if they are A+O x4 a(1) person, (2) place, (3) time, and (4) situation.and are stable psychiatrically;-pt may need a POA (power of attorney) since incapable of making decisions

You own a law firm and your student accidentally destroyed evidence that freed someone (showed that they were innocent). However, if you tell on your student they will go to jail. If you do not, the inncocent person will go to jail for no reason. What do you do?

I would first have a private conversation with my student to gather all the facts. I would want to ensure that the evidence was truly acidentally lost and no foul play was involved. I would also try to sttempt to replace the lost evidence. If this could not be done, as a lawyer, I would be bound by my professional obligations and code of ethics to report the accident to the authorities. Although this would cause immense harm to the student and her familiy, etc. and of couse I would be sympathetic and offer any support, it would be illegal and unethical to not inform the authorities and send an innocent person to jail. If I fail to act ethically and legally, would lose my license to practice law, defame the practice which effects the employees, and set a bad example for my student. However, i would ensure authorities that it was an honest mistake and ask them to be considerate of that.

You are a surgeon. You present to the hospital at 7:30am to prepare for the day. As you are changing, a fellow surgeon - a friend of yours - enters the change room and they are acting strangely. You smell a slight scent of alcohol when they come close to you. You know that this surgeon is next in line to run the Department of Surgery at your hospital and will be making important decisions about funding and OR time in the very near future, and you have never seen them act this way before.

In this situation, I need to remain objective and non judgemental as I do not have all the facts. I do not want to assume that the surgeon is intoxicated and will operate on a patient. Perhaps the surgeon smells like alcohol because someone spilled some on him or he is intoxicated, but not planning on operating and left something at the hospital. Alternatively, the surgeon could be intoxicated and chose to come to work and operate. Thus, I need to gather more information. I would talk to the surgeon privately and explain that I was concerned about the situation. If he was in fact going to operate and had been drinking, I would encourage him to go home and find another surgeon that could perform the surgery. If the surgeon dismissed my concerns, then I would remind him that he is putting the patient's safety at risk. He is also putting his medical license at risk, as well as mine. If he was not willing to leave then I would have to report him.

Have you ever witnessed or personally experienced a situation where professional boundaries were crossed?

When I was working as a medical technician, overtime my Health and Wellness Director (HWD) was becoming increasingly fond of / closer to one of my co-workers. From simple gestures to full-on flirtations in the workplace, the relationship was headed into a more romantic setting. As a leader of the caregiving team, I wanted to not only ensure fairness for everyone but to make sure that the relationships were professional at the same time. Nothing is wrong with having those personal relationships, but you have to do them in a way that doesn't compromise the working dynamic of the healthcare team. I had to have a private conversation with both my HWD and my coworker and say how having these relationships could be seen as favoritism towards the other. This could create problems down the line in terms of trust and potential drama within the healthcare team, putting both their professional integrities in jeopardy. After explaining to them the possible repercussions, they both agreed on the issue at hand and maintained greater professionalism in the workplace.

Describe a time where you witnessed or personally faced a conflict of interest.

When someone asked me for a letter of recommendation for a nursing program but even though we were friends her work ethic was not the best. I caught her sleeping on the job once and not having a formidable reputation with the residents I had worked with at the nursing home we were both employed at. I told her I would be happy to write the letter but warned her it would not be the best due to what I have witnessed in her performance. I informed her of others who would be willing to write her a stronger letter of recommendation. It would not be in my best interest to recommend someone who I feel couldn't best exemplify what qualities her future profession demanded.

Describe a time when you have entered a conflict with a supervisor.

When trying to schedule time off during christmas break but was not allocated all the time I wanted. Even though I never called in sick, missed a shift, and even covered for missing coworkers when they were absent for whatever reason, I had hoped that my PTO time scheduled would be validated from all the hard work I put into it. My supervisor did sympathize with me and that I did deserve the time off, but she needed enough available staff to cover the winter holidays. Through planning out my schedule and having private conversations with her, I compromised in that even though I didnt get all my time off and worekd over the holiday, I scheduled a longer vacation when it was not as busy / when more people could cover my shifts. This ensured a good working dynamic and that all aspects were considered in my role with the company.
