During what phase of the cell cycle does cell division occur?
M phase
During what phase of the cell cycle does mitosis and cytokinesis occur?
M phase
S
DNA replication
G2
prepares for mitosis
Put the following stages of mitosis in order: anaphase, prophase, metaphase, and telophase
prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase
Anaphase
sister chromatids are pulled apart
metaphase
sister chromatids lineup in the middle of the cell
During what phase of the cell cycle does the cell prepare for mitosis?
G2
prophase
breaks down nucleus, spindles fibers form, chromatin to chromosomes
What is a series of events that cells go through as they grow and divide?
cell cycle
G1
cell grows
Put the following actions in order: DNA, replication, cell grows, cell division, cell prepares for mitosis
cell grows, DNA replication, cell prepares for mitosis, cell division
cytokinesis
cell splits into, chromosomes to chromatin
Centromere
holds sister chromatids together
M
cell division
sister chromatids
genetically identical
Explain why cells don't just continue to grow larger as organisms grow larger. Why do cells divide?
Cells need to stay small, so when they get big enough they divide. Small size allows the cell to get nutrients it needs in the center of the cell quickly. Cells that are too large can't get nutrients to the center quick enough and die.
During what phase of the cell cycle does the cell grow?
G1 & G2
Put the following stages of the cell cycle in order: G2, S, G1, M
G1, S, G2, M
Put the following in order: G2, G1, S, mitosis, cytokinesis
G1, S, G2, mitosis, cytokinesis
During what stage does the G1, S, and G2 phases happen?
interphase
What is the longest stage of the cell cycle called?
interphase
why aren't we one giant cell?
1. DNA overload 2. surface area to volume ratio
cell theory
1. all living things are made from one or more cells 2. cells are the basic unit of life 3. all cells come from pre-existing cells
teleophase
2 nuclei form
How many stages are there in mitosis?
4
chromosomes
Long strands of DNA; in human body, 23 pairs
During what phase of the cell cycle is DNA replicated?
S phase
Chromatin
loosely packed DNA; interphase
