Cell structure
What is EXOCYTOSIS?
a process by which the contents of a cell vacuole are released to the exterior through fusion of the vacuole membrane with the cell membrane.
What is the function of the contractile vacuole?(in unicellular organisms only)
Expels excess water taken in by osmosis
Why is the cell membrane semipermeable?
Because it's a cell structure that controls what enters and leaves the cell.
What do plant cells have that animal cells don't?
Cell wall, chloroplasts and a permanent vacuole.
What is the function of the nucleus?
Controls all the cell activities. contains genetic information(DNA) and RNA and is reasonable for growth and reproduction.
What does it it mean that proteins are secreted?
It means "exported"
Why is the cell wall important?
It strengthens the cell and is made up of cellulose fibers
Where is the mitochondria found and what does it do?
In most cells in which the biochemical processes of respiration and energy production occur. most energy is released by respiration here.
What is the vacuole and what does it do?
It's a cell organelle that stores materials such as water, salts, proteins and carbohydrates.it's filled with cell sap to keep the cell turgid.
What is a lysosome and what is it's function?
It's a small round cell structure containing chemicals that break down large food particles into smaller ones.
What is the endoplasmic reticulum and what does it do?
It's a system of membranes that is found in a cells cytoplasm and that assists in the production of proteins and in the production of lips.
What is protein synthesis?
It's of the most fundamental biological processes by which individual cells build their specific proteins.
Why is the cytoplasm important?
It's where chemical reactions take place, a jelly like fluid inside the cell in which organelles are suspended.. that is where most cellular activities occur, such as many metabolic pathways including Glycolysis, and processes such as cell division. most chemical processes take place here, are controlled by enzymes
What does semipermeable mean?
It is within the cytoplasm that most cellular activities occur, such as many metabolic pathways including Glycolysis, and processes such as cell division. cytoplasm is a part of the cell that holds the other organelles of the cell together.
What is the function of the rough endoplasmic reticulum(Rough ER)?
Large surface area for chemical reactions, has ribosomes attached to the membrane making it rough, present in plant and animal cells, transports proteins that are to be secreted by the cell.
What is the cilila for in unicellular organisms?
Movement
What is the flagella for in the unicellular organisms?
Movement
What feautures do the animal and plant cell have in commun?
Nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, mitochondria and ribosomes.
What is the function of the golgi body?
Proteins which must be secreted are here. Proteins are processed and packaged in which to be discharged outside of the wall by a process called EXOCYTOSIS
What happens in the ribosomes?
Protein synthesis happens here.
What is the function of the food vacuole?(in unicellular organisms only(
To transport and digest food
Where are ribosomes found and what do they do?
They are constructed in the nucleus and function as the site of protein synthesis in the cytoplasm, they are responsible for building protein molecules in the cytoplasm and the ER.
What do chloroplasts do?
They contain chlorophyll, which absorbs light energy for photosynthesis.
