whole numbers

Natural numbers ( counting numbers) and zero; 0, 1, 2, 3...

absolute value

The distance a number is from zero on a number line

x-coordinate

the first number in an ordered pair

Integers

-3,-2,-1,0,1,2,3

natural numbers

1,2,3

algebraic expression

A mathematical phrase involving at least one variable and sometimes numbers and operation symbols.

equation

A mathematical sentence that contains an equals sign.

coordinate plane

A plane that is divided into four regions by a horizontal line called the x-axis and a vertical line called the y-axis.

function

A relationship that assigns exactly one output value to one input value.

inequality

A statement that compares two quantities using <, >, ≤,≥, or ≠

Variable

A symbol used to represent a quantity that can change

outlier

A value that "lies outside" (is much smaller or larger than) most of the other values in a set of data.

real numbers

All rational and irrational numbers

range

Distance between highest and lowest scores in a set of data.

median

Middle number

coordinates

Ordered pairs that identify points on a coordinate plane. (x,y)

order of operations

PEMDAS

absolute value of a real number

The absolute value of x is the distance from zero to x on a number line, denoted |x|

midpoint

The halfway point of a line segment

base

The number that is going to be raised to a power.

Domain

The possible values for the input of a relation or function

Range of a function

The set of all possible output values of a function

Mode

The value that occurs most frequently in a given data set.

simplify

To replace an expression with its simplest name or form.

evaluate

To substitute a given number for each variable, and then simplify.

stem and leaf plot

a display of data made by using the digits of the values

trend line

a line on a scatter plot that helps show the correlation between data sets more clearly

ordered pair

a pair of numbers used to locate a point

positive correlation

a relationship between variables in which one variable increases as the other variable also increases

independent variable

a variable (often denoted by x ) whose variation does not depend on that of another.

dependent variable

a variable (often denoted by y ) whose value depends on that of another.

function rule

an equation that describes a function

open sentence

an equation with one or more variables

Counterexample

an example used to support a claim or statement that is the opposite of another claim or statement

rational numbers

any number that you can write in the form a/b

negative correlation

as one variable increases, the other decreases

mean

average

power

has 2 parts, a base and an exponent

Exponets

little number-how mant times to multiply the base number/power

measures of central tendency

mean, median, mode

irrational numbers

numbers that cannot be expressed in the form a/b, where a and b are integers and b =0.

quadrant

one of four sections into which the coordinate plane is divided

x-axis

the horizontal number line in a coordinate plane

y-coordinate

the second number in an ordered pair

y-axis

the vertical axis on a coordinate plane

no correlation

there does not appear to be a relationship between two sets of data

scatter plot

two groups of data

opposites

two numbers with the same absolute value but different signs

origin

where the axes intersect
