Chapter 13: another view on hester

7 years have pasted. Hester is more involved in society (gives food to poor, nurses sick, aid in times of trouble). The A now is seen as Able. Hester is no longer a tender and passionate women but burned by the red hot letter, became bare and a harsh outline. She begins to think about the harm she may have causes dimmes by keeping chilly a secret. Also, the A hasn't done its job bc hester thinks about murder suicide.

Chapter 19: The child at the brook-side

After being asked to join hester and dimmes, Pearl remains on the other side of the brook. She refuses to come back and points to her empty chest spot. Pearl throws a temper tantrum bc she is not longer wearing the A. Dimmes asks hester to put it back on to shush her up. Hester puts it back on and becomes her sad self again. Pearl comes back and kisses her mom and the A. Pearl asks if dimmes is coming back with them. Dimmes kisses pearl and she runs to the brook to wash it off.

Chapter 18: A flood of sunshine

After deciding to flee dimmes claims he can feel joy again. Hester takes off the A and she regains her beauty that the A has stolen from her. Dimmes worries if pearl will like him. The flowers ask pearl to decorate herself with them and is associated with a pigeon, fox, squirrel, wolf, and a partridge. Hester calls from pearl.

Chapter 10: the leech and his patient

Dimmes begins to be suspicious of all men because he is so sick. He finds chilly with black herbs that he says he found growing out of an unmarked grave and it is the sins they didn't confess. Chilly continues to jab at dimmes in hopes of learns all private things about him. Then they both see pearl dancing on a grave but soon pearl drags hester away because the "black man" aka chilly is there and she doesn't want him to get them bc he has already gotten dimmes. After dimmes and chilly become friends again chilly finds him asleep and finds something on his chest and danced as if the devil just got another soul

Chapter 11:the interior of a heart

Dimmes illness has made him give the most powerful sermons usually about sin. He relates well to the people through sin. He still wants to confess but doesn't so he is still staying up at night and sees visions. In one he sees hester and pearl where hester points at the A then at his chest. Dimmes starts to whip himself, fasts, and hold vigils. He decides to hold a vigil on the scaffold.

Chapter 12: the minister's vigil

Dimmes is on the scaffold and screams in pain and worries everyone hear. Wilson walks by coming from dying winthrop, but doesn't see him up there. But dimmes thought he called out to him. Dimmes starts to wonder what the town would think about a sinful reverend. Dimmes seeing hester and pearl and invites them up with him. when they all hold hands, an electric chain is formed. He feels energized and warmed. Pearl asks if he will stand with them tomorrow but he says no but on judgement day. A meteor is in the sky and dimmes sees an A. Pearl points at chilly and dimmes asks who he really his and pearl just says childish gibberish in his ear. Chilly comes and says dimmes is sleepwalking.

Chapter 17: the pastor and his parishioner

Hester and dimmes finally escape the town and chilly to talk. They hold hands and sit down, first making small talk. Hester asks if he has found peace and he says no he is miserable. Hester tells him that chilly is her husband. Which causes a dark transfiguration in dimmes and blames hester for his suffering. She pulls him into her chest and begs for his forgiveness. She doesn't want to let go bc then she will see his frown at her. He forgives her and the make plans to flee together.

Chapter 16: a forest walk

Hester and pearl go to the forest to find dimmes where hester has heard he will be. She wants to tell him about chilly. Pearl tells hester that the sun doesn't love her bc everyt time she comes near it the sun fade/moves away. Pearl then asks to hear the story about the black man that lives in the woods and has people sign his book with their blood. They see someone(dimmes) and pearl wonders if it is the black man. Hester sends her off to play and pearl wonders if the black man as left a mark on dimmes chest and thats why he holds it.

Chapter 14: hester and the physician

Hester ask chilly to stop messing with dimmes. He says he has heard things that maybe she cant take off her A but she says it is not their choice and if is was ready to no longer wear it the A would fall off. She says it is time to tell dimmes chilly's real identity. Chilly sees how evil and deformed he has becomes re knows he used to be a scholar. Hester asks him to stop with his revenge and become human again. Chilly tells her do what you want and let the black flowers grow its our fate.

Chapter 15: hester and pearl

Hester finds pearl playing and pretending to be a mermaid and has made herself an A out of seaweed. Hester asks what pearl thinks the meaning of the letter is and she says its the same reason dimmes holds his chest and its from the horn book. Hester says its for the gold and its pretty. Pearl continues to ask her about it day after. So hester threatens to look her in a dark closet.
