Chapter 11
When are gfci receptacles required
All 15 or 20 amp receptacles that are placed in bathrooms including those used as part of bathroom light circuits, dishwashers, washing machines, dryers, laundry areas, outdoor receptacles, crawl space receptacles, unfinished basement, kitchen countertop areas, pool motors and pumps, any receptacle within 6 inches of any sink, any boat house
What are afci
Arc fault circuit interrupters are designed to prevent electrical fires in situations where arc faults occur
How much imbalance can gfci detect
As little as 4 to 5 milliamps
What is an afci circuit breaker
Can detect line to neutral or line to ground arc faults. Breakers are either 15-20 amps at 120 volts for singel phase wiring
What is a combination afci
Combination AFCI's breakers combine the function of branch feeder AFCI and receptacle AFCI which can provide AFCI protection for devices plugged into protected receptacles
What are the 3 types of gfcis used in home
Gfci receptacle, gfci circuit breaker, portable gfci
What is a gfci receptacle
Gfci receptacles are equipped with reset and test buttons which allow for gfci outlets to be tested after they have been tripped. Gfci can be installed to protect a single outlet as all outlets on its circuit
What is a gfci circuit breaker
Installed to protect an entire circuit at the electrical panel. Can be between 15 to 60 amps and provide overcurrent protection and gfci protection to each outlet on the circuit
Where is afci protection required
Kitchen, family room, dining room, living room, bedroom, sunroom, library, den, office, hallways, closets
What do afcis must have
Metal conduit protection running from circuit breaker to the first afci receptacle
What is an afci receptacle
Protect outlets downstream, wires should be connected to the circuit breaker through metal conduit
What are gfci and afci used for
Protect people from electric shock or harm
What is a portable AFCI
Provide convenient AFCI protection when needed on the job site or mobile applications offer 15 A or 20 A protection at 120 V
What is an arc fault
Unforseen arcing condition that can happen in electrical circuits, usually caused by damaged wiring or device cords
What is a portable gfci
Utilized while using power tools on the jobsite. They are plugged into normal outlets that provide 15 or 20 amp overcurrent protection. Portable gfci should be used on a temporary basis when needed
What do gfcis realize and how fast do they cut power off
Realize that electrical flow is traveling through you because of the change of flow from hot to neutral and they can cut off as fast as 1/13 second
What are the types of afci
Receptacle, circuit breaker, combination, portable
