-After South Carolina learned that Lincoln had won the election it responded by seceding from the union -Southerners leaders who opposed secession Andrew Johnson ( future VP + President), Sam Houston (Texas). -First sate to secede from the Union: South California -Name of the new southern nation: Confederate states of Am -President of the southern nation: Jefferson Davis - Lincoln's message to seceding states: He meant no harm and had no intention of interfering within slavery were it unprecedentedly existing -Response of seceding states to Lincoln's message: Rejection, Size federal property- Fort Sumter
Fort Sumter
-Lincoln's plan to deal with the siege of For Sumter: Send a supply ship within no guns, so as to not appear threatening -South California response to Lincoln's plan: they fire on the for. starting civil war.
The Election of 1860
-There were four Democratic candidates in the election -Northern Democratic candidate: Stephen Douglass -Southern Democratic candidate: John Breckenridge -Constitutional Union candidate: John Bell -Republican candidate: Abraham Lincoln -Although he did not receive a majority of the popular vote, Lincoln received enough Electoral votes to win the election. -the election showed how fragmented the nation was.
Confederacy States
a formation of the seven southern states that seceded from the Union.
John Crittenden
a senator from Kentucky tried a last minute bill to expand the Missouri Compromise with an amendment to the Constitution.
John C. Breckenridge
becomes the southern Democrat candidate from Kentucky (this splits the Democrat ticket because Stephen Douglass run for the Northern Democrats). The main reason is the issue of slavery
Civil War
is a war between opposing groups of citizens of the same country
Jefferson Davis
of Mississippi was names the first president of the confederacy
John Bell
runs under the constitutional Union party from Tennessee (he was formally from the Whig party)
Fort Sumner
was held by Union forces of the coast of South Carolina. The Confederates asked for the Union to surrender the fort and Union refused. This marked the official beginning of the Civil War.
