Who was Emilio Aguinaldo? Why was he a problem for the United States?

Emilio Aguinaldo was a leader of a Filipino rebellion to defend against Spain. But once he and his group saw that the U.S wasn't going to give them independence, they decided to go to war. The war lasted 2 ½ years and cost the U.S more time, money and casualties than the Spanish and American.

Explain how American journalists contributed to the outbreak of the Spanish-American War.

Journalists made a story exaggerated or inaccurate to stir up great interest in the growing conflict. Also reporters put a sympathetic view in readers mind so that people would want to help Cubans.

Evaluate McKinley's justifications for annexing the Philippines.

McKinley didn't want the Philippines to be controlled by anybody else and didn't want it to become an anarchy.

Describe the provisions of the treaty that ended the Spanish-American war.

Spain signed a truce on August 12, 1898. Spanish and American diplomats met in Paris on October 1. By December 10, they had produced a treaty. Spain agreed to give up Cuba and Puerto Rico in the Caribbean and Guam and the Philippines in the Pacific to the United states. The U.S also bought the Philippines for 20 million from Spain.

Summarize he provisions of the Teller Amendment

The Teller Amendment said that the United states had no intention of adding Cuba to its empire. It also said that the United states desired only for Cuba's independence.

Identify the two important events that sparked the Spanish American War.

The first event was when a letter from the Spanish minister to the U.S was stolen by Cuban rebels and given to the Hearst press. It described McKinley (president of U.S) as "weak and a bidder for the admiration of the crowd, besides being a common politician." This was considered a national insult which sparked the war. The second event was when the USS Maine, an American warship, was anchored in Havana, Cuba. While still anchored the ship exploded killing two officers and 250 enlisted men. So Americans blamed Spain. These two events sparked the Spanish American war.
