Chapter 20 Section 2 The Harding Presidency
Ohio Gang
A group of poker playing men that were friends of President Warren Harding. He appointed them to offices and they used their power to gain more money for themselves. They were involved in scandals ruining Harding's reputation, even though he wasn't involved.
Warren G. Harding
Republican president elected in 1920, promised a "return to normalcy."
Teapot Dome Scandal
Scandal during the Harding administration involving the granting of oil drilling rights on government land in return for money.
Charles Evens Hughes
Secretary of State under Harding. Proposed a 10 year moratorium on the construction of major new warships at the Washington Conference.
Albert B. Fall
Secretary of the Interior during Harding's administration, and was a scheming anti-conservationist. He was convicted of leasing naval oil reserves and collecting bribes, called the Teapot Dome Scandal.
Fordney-McCumber Tariff
Taxed US imports at 60% -the highest level ever. It made it possible for Britain and France to sell their goods in the US. And because of this they could not afford to repay their debt they owed the US.
