In the "incense" incident described on page 150, about two pounds of the material was retrieved from the car. What would be the maximum sentence if the driver were convicted as a first offense?
1lb = .454kg 2lbs = .908kg - less that 50kg, so... not more than 5 years, fine not more than $250,000.
What is the presumptive test? When can it be useful? What are its limitations?
A presumptive test presumes the presence of the questioned substance. It is useful because it tells if the drug is used. False positive is possible--meaning that the test result is positive but the substance is not present.
A bag of pills was confiscated from a student. They were small, white, and heart-shaped, possibly with a numeral on one side. Should the student be arrested?
According to the PDR, the pills are Visken, but even if they were not they would be confiscated and analyzed before any arrest would be made
What are the differences among a controlled substance, an illicit drug, a prescription drug, and an OTC drug?
Controlled - drugs that are restricted by law. illicit - illegal drug or legal drug used in an illegal way prescription - may be used only if prescribed by a doctor. OTC - over the counter, no prescription necessary
Explain the basis of GC-MS to a jury, and how ethyl alcohol can be differentiated from propyl alcohol?
GC-MS is gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer. by which complex mixtures of chemicals may be separated, identified and quantified. The two types of alcohol can be differentiated by the mass spectrometer as it bombards the samples with electrons.
What is the electromagnetic spectrum? Which end of it is the high energy part? How is the EMS used in analytical analyses?
It is a full range of energy. Gamma rays have the highest energy. It is used for confirmatory tests for drugs--tests that specifically identify one substance.
LSD
Lysergic acid diethylamide
NSAID
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug
PCP
Phencyclidine
PDR
Physicians' Desk Reference
Why is Ritalin prescribed? Can it be addictive? What common side effects may occur with its prescribed use? What are some symptoms of Ritalin overdose?
Ritalin is a stimulant. It can treat ADHD and narcolepsy, it can be addictive if used illicitly, common side effects are nervousness, vomiting, nausea,
THC
Tetrahydrocannabinol
A sample of light brown powder found in the kitchen of an alleged drug house gives a blue precipitate with cobalt thiocyanate. What is it? Is there enough evidence to prosecute?
This could be crack cocaine, but without a confirmation there is not enough evidence to prosecute
chromatography
a way to separate the components of a mixture
ion
an atom that has lost of gained one more electrons (positive or negative charge)
AMU
atomic mass unit
Co (II)
cobalt
How are illicit drugs classified?
hallucinogens--marijuana stimulants--cocaine narcotics--aspirin depressants--alcohol
spectrophotometry
measurement of the absorption of electromagnetic radiation of a substance at different wavelengths.
If, in the incident at the Detriot Airport, the film canister contained 50 grams of cocaine and 10 more were found in the man's camera bag, what could be the sentence if he were convicted as a first offense?
no less than 10 years of prison & fine of not more than $4 million individual.
OTC
over the counter
What are the types of chromatography?
paper, gas, liquid
ppm
parts-per-million
Rf
retention factor
analyte
substance that is being analyzed
metabolism
the sum of all chemical processes occuring in an organism
TLC
thin-layer chromatography
What are Xanax, Zithromax, and Zocor?
xanax treats anxiety. zithromax treats infections. zocor treats high cholestrol.
