Endothermic

A chemical reaction that absorbs (takes in) heat energy causing a drop in temperature

Exothermic

A chemical reaction that gives off heat energy causing an increase in temperature.

Density

Thermal Energy

The energy (heat) contained in the motion and vibration of its molecules. It is measured through temperature.

Mass

The measure of the amount of matter in an object. Units are usually grams or kilograms.

Volume

The measure of the amount of space that a substance or an object takes up.

Deposition

The process by which a gas changes phase and turns directly into a solid without passing through the liquid phase.

Condensation

The process by which water vapor (gas) in the air is changed into a liquid

Sublimation

The process of a substance changing directly from a solid to a gas.

Conduction

The process of transferring energy from a higher temperature to a lower temperature by direct contact.

Evaporation

The process of turning a liquid into a vapor or gas.

Chemical Reactions

The process when substances are changed into new substances.

Products

The substance formed during a chemical reaction. Reactant → Product

Reactants

The substance present before a chemical reaction. Reactant → Product

Freezing Point

The temperature at which a liquid changes to a solid.

Energy Transfer

The transfer of energy from one object or material to another.

Chemical Properties

These are observed during a chemical reaction. Ex) flammability (how a substance will ignite), radioactivity, and toxicity (how a substance will damage something living).

Physical Properties

These can be measured without changing the composition of the matter. They are used to observe and describe matter. Ex) Texture, color, melting and boiling point
