COMM 100 Chapter 1-What is Communication?
3. Linear Model Assumptions
-If I say it and you hear it, you'll understand my meaning *successful comm is straightforward *miscommunication is relatively easy to fix
1. Linear Model Assumptions
-Language transfers thoughts/feelings between people *symbols contain meanings; comm is a pipeline -Me TA and Message
2 Models of Communication
-Linear Model -Dynamic/Transactional Model
2. CommunicatioN is about creating INTERSUBJECTIVE MEANINGS
-SOME shared meaning but not always identical -can be multiple meanings from a single message *"the apartment was calm and peaceful" -Enough to coordinate and control activity *building activity *relationships- "LOVE"
2. Linear Model Assumptions
-Senders simply insert thoughts/feelings into words *sender is ACTIVE, receiver is passive -who do we blame is communication fails?
Keyword: PROCESS
-communicatioN functions as a verb *we communicate! *processes that involve work and collaboration
Noise
-elements that impede effective communication *external noise (music in the room) *physiological noise (something YOU feel) -hungover *psychological noise (breakup)
Environment
-fields of experience *personal experiences, cultural bachground (bubble) -the f-you kid -Lily from Sri Lanka *sometimes left off of this model
5 Types of Communication
-intrapersonal -interpersonal -small group -organizational -mass comm
1. CommunicatioN is a process!
-meaning is not something possessed by me and transferred to you -it is something that emerges from our interaction (Alien on the Moon) -we are both senders and receivers at the same time *me in class when I am teaching
Critique of Linear
-oversimplifies interpersonal, small group, and organizational communication -not one way! -communicating requires ACTION! *our activity -communicatioN functions as a verb
Communication (Alt. Text Def)
-the simultaneous sharing and creating of meaning through human symbolic action
3. CommunicatioN constructs our realities
-we construct meanings through symbols *lunch vs. sex -we create meaning; symbols are just our tools -the words we use influence our reality *war vs. family -the was we talk about something literally constructs how we think of it
3 Linear Model Assumptions
...
3 Characteristics of the Dynamic /Transactional Model
1. CommunicatioN is a process! 2. CommunicatioN is about creating INTERSUBJECTIVE MEANINGS 3. CommunicatioN constructs our realities
2 Additions to the Linear Model
1. Noise 2. Environment
Linear Model
sender-->message-->reciever Communication becomes CommunicationS (noun) -playdough (a thing!)
Communication
the process of human beings responding to the behavior of other persons
What factor might complicate this sender, message, receiver model?
think of the activity!!
