Developing an Instructional Management System:

- Collect and use date for diagnostic decisions - Develop system for monitoring student progress - Select skill-focused teaching strategies, materials, and activities based on student needs - Create flexible student groups - Develop a daily schedule and a rotation chart for movement through small groups

Tier 1: Core Classroom Reading Instruction

- High quality, whole-group instruction - Grounded in scientifically based reading research - Benchmark testing of all students to determine instructional needs at least three times per year (fall, winter, and spring) - Ongoing professional development to provide teachers wight he necessary tools to ensure every students receives quality reading instruction

What is Differentiated Instruction?

- It supplements high- quality, grade level, and whole-group instruction - Is is explicit, research-based, skills-based reading instruction - It is tailored to meet each student's specific needs - It is most often conducted in small groups - It provides increased practice opportunities - It is based on assessment

For organizing groups, consider the following:

- Which students need additional instruction and in what areas? - What are their specific instructional needs in these areas? - How much progress are we making in addressing these needs? - How effective is the additional instructional across students? - Use materials that match reading levels of students - Design skills-focused lessons that include student engagement - Change instructional content and types of lesson structures and activities as needed.

Tier 2: Supplemental Instruction

Designed to meet the needs of these students by providing them with additional small-group reading instruction daily - More complex and targeted instruction - Small groups, formed and reformed - One group with teacher while others are involved in MEANINGFUL literacy activities - Enrichment when at/near grade level - Reteach for those who are struggling

Tier 3: Instruction for Intensive Intervention

Provides instruction that is more explicit, more intensive, and specifically designed to meet their individual needs - More responsive - More temporary - More flexible
