Give examples of what may be included when identifying "Specific Clues."

-Problem drivers -Road construction -intersections -Standing water, patches of snow, pot holes or objects can cause open zones to close -Rain, snow, and ice on road surface

Define Open Zone.

An "open zone" is one in which there's nothing standing in the way of your car. Basically, the zone is clear of any obstacles, obstructions, or other cars

The IPDE Process

An organuzed method of seeing, thinking and responding to a driving situation.

Define Decide and list your four choices.

Definition - Decide how to avoid collision Change/Maintain direction 2. Change/Maintain speed 3. Communicate with other drivers 4. Combine above actions

Define Execute

Definition - Simply carry out the actions you decide to do

Define Predict and list the four main predictions you should be making.

Definition - Using knowledge, good judgement, and prior experiences to predict: Actions of other users How our speed will affect us How direction will affect us Will we have good control if we need to change speed or direction?

The Smith System

Definition: An organized method to help drivers develop good viewing habits. -Aim high in steering -Look 12-15 seconds ahead of your path-of-travel; keep your eyes up avoid watching the front of your car. -Keep your eyes moving -Scan left and right and out and in in an orderly visual search pattern for hazards. -Get the big picture -Check mirrors and blind-spots regularly to identify what is going on around you -Make sure others see you -Position yourself to be seen; use signals and horn when necessary to communicate to others -Leave yourself an out -Always have space around your car to move to in case of an emergency; avoid trapping yourself with no where to go.

What does it mean to "Compromise Space/Hazards?"

Give as much space as possible to the greater hazard. For example, if a truck is coming towards you with parked cars on the side of the road, use brake and let the truck pass and then proceed.

Define Identify and list the six items you should be identifying.

Open and closed zones Specific clues Other users Roadway features/conditions traffic controls line-of-sight restrictions

Why is an intersection a high-risk area?

Stopped traffic or entering traffic can cause line-of-sight restrictions or even a closed-zone.

Define Field of Vision

The area you can see while looking straight ahead

Define Space Cushion -

The space all around your vehicle0

Define Target Area Range

The space from your vehicle to the target area. You search this range to detect early any conditions that might effect your intended path of travel.

What does it mean to "Separate a Hazard?"

Times you will face more than one hazard at the same time. Do not try to handle both hazards at once. Adjust speed so you only have to deal with one hazard at a time. For example, if you and a truck are approaching a one way road at the same time, clear and let the truck go so you can avoid a crash and center your car.

What does it mean to "Minimize a Hazard?"

To reduce the possibility of conflict, by deciding to put more space between you and a hazard. For example, steer away from a parked car on the street and return back to your lane once you've passed.

The Zone Control System

organized method for managing space; 6 zones around your vehicle

Define Selective Seeing

selecting and identifying only those clues or restrictions, hazards, or conflicts that are important to your driving task.

Define Closed Zone

space not open to you because ofa restriction in your line of sight or intended path of travel

When searching for other users, what should you include in your search?

specific clues - roadway features like signs - roadway conditions (Is it bumpy? What kind of weather are you driving in?) - traffic controls - condition of your vehicle (Is it safe to drive?) - use visual search pattern (pattern in driving) and selective seeing (paying attention to hazards, restrictions, or cautions that may impact your driving) -roadway hazards -roadway surface
