-Allows user to retrieve email from server, allows organization and downloads of email copies (unlike POP3)

-Developed to transmit files securely by encrypting

Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME)

-Extends email format; ASCII + pictures, word processor documents; used with SMTP

Exchange

-Microsoft; mail server, contact manager, and calendaring software; Outlook uses MAPI (Messaging Application Programming Interface) to connect to Exchange servers, provide email/contacts/calendar info

Post Office Protocol version 3 (POP3)

-Retrieves email from remote server TCP/IP -Does not save emails, but can be modified to save for a certain period of time

Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP)

-Simple text based protocol that transmits emails (ASCII encoded text) across TCP/IP network Must be implemented to send email; email client --> server or server --> server; message sent after recipients identified + verified
