CAE

(Computer Assisted Engineering) A set of tools and methods for constructing, testing and analyzing virtual models of designed objects.

RFP

(Request For Proposals) A company that requires engineering work to be done will generally publish an RFP. An RFP describes the work to be done and asks that interested engineers submit their proposals for doing the work.

co2 scrubber

A device used to remove carbon dioxide (CO2) from air.

Engineering Proposal

A document prepared by an engineer that describes in outline form how he or she would solve a problem described by the potential client. The purpose of the proposal is to convince the client that the proposed solution is the best one, and that the proposing engineer or firm is capable of doing the required work.

Salutation

A greeting, in particular a formal greeting used in a letter; an act of honor or courteous recognition.

Lathe

A machining tool that uses a moving tool to remove materials from a rotating workpiece.

Statistical Process Control (SPC)

A mathematical procedure for measuring and tracking the variability in a manufacturing process.

brainstorming

A method of problem solving in which ideas are listed by participants. The ideas should be as creative and wide-ranging as possible. Only after all ideas have been collected are they evaluated.

Mentor

A person who is experienced in a particular field who makes himself or herself available to guide a younger person make his or her way in that field. A mentor offers advice on how to enter the profession, what to study, where to work and on how to handle various challenges that may present themselves in one's career.

Geosynchronous Satellite

A satellite that repeatedly follows a set path over the Earth. Such satellites are used as part of communications networks. Geostationary satellites are geosynchronous satellites that are always positioned above the same point on Earth. Thus, the antennae on Earth that communicate with these satellites only have to point in one direction, and are thus less expensive than those that have to follow satellites as they move through the sky.

Homogeneous

A substance or material that is uniform in structure or composition throughout.

Ethics

A system of beliefs of what is right and what is wrong.

Valediction

An act of bidding farewell; any word or words used to say goodbye

Lifecycle Environmental Assessment

An analysis performed on the total damage caused to the environment by a product, including damage caused during the extraction of its raw materials, its manufacture, its transportation and packing, its use

Whistle Blowing

An engineer is required by law to report safety infringements committed by his or her employer and clients. Reporting such infringements is called whistle blowing.

CAD

Computer Aided Design. An earlier meaning is Computer Aided Drafting, which refers to more primitive software. CAD is to drawing as the word processor is to creating documents. CAD enables creating sophisticated, standardized drawings that can be saved as files, edited, shared, linked and much more.

Computer Engineering

Computer engineers use knowledge of electrical engineering and of computer science to design computer hardware, such as microprocessors.

Industrial Engineering

Industrial engineering focuses on designing and improving systems consisting of people, machinery, money, material and processes, all for maximum efficiency and effectiveness.

Non-destructive Testing

Methods of testing engineering designs without having to destroy the build objects. Project - An endeavor to achieve a defined goal within a specified period of time.

Robotics Engineering

Robotics engineers combine knowledge of mechanical, electronic and computer engineering to design the hardware and software components of robots.

Ductility

The ability to permit change of shape without fracture.

Engineering

The application of scientific and mathematical principles for practical purposes. Engineering thus includes the design, manufacture, and operation of structures, machines and processes.

Technology

The application of scientific knowledge in the industrial or commercial fields.

Innovation

The creation of a new device or method following study and experimentation.

Electrical Engineering

The field of engineering that focuses on the application of knowledge of electricity to the design of electrical machinery and the generation and transmission of electrical power.

Environmental Engineering

The field of engineering that focuses on the application of science and engineering principles to improving or maintaining the environment.

Civil Engineering

The field of engineering that focuses on the design and construction of public works, such as bridges or dams, and other large facilities.

Mechanical Engineering

The field of engineering that focuses on the design of machines and on the generation and application of heat and mechanical power.

Chemical Engineering

The field of engineering that focuses on the production of chemicals and other products manufactured using chemical processes.

Manufacturing

The making of goods or wares by manual labor or by machinery, especially on a large scale.

Hydraulics

The science of the behavior of fluids. Hydraulics is used in many machines - for example, the arms of earth moving equipment are moved under hydraulic power.

Social Science

The study of the way humans act and interact in society.
