English 2 Online Learning Expectations
2 way communication
***If I message you directly, you need to respond.*** If I do not get a response, I am assuming you did not get my message. This means I may call your parent/guardian or use other means to reach out and check on you.
submitting assignments
All assignments must be submitted to Google Classroom. Please DO NOT "share" documents with me or send them via email without permission. Assignments must be marked as complete for me to grade them. Once the assignment is turned in, it should say "turned in" in green. If it still says "missing" or "assigned", something went wrong.
Remind
All students are required to join the Remind for this class; this is the BEST way to get in touch with me and get a quick response. Remind codes are on the syllabus and the Week 1 Agenda posted in Classroom. Please encourage your parents/guardians to join as well.
weekly agendas
An agenda for the week including assignments, due dates, Google Meet information, etc. will be posted to Google Classroom at the beginning of each week. Please complete assignments in the order that they are posted and pay attention to due dates. Agendas are subject to change, so please review them daily.
due dates
Assignments will be posted throughout the week and will generally be due before midnight on Wednesdays and Fridays. Please check the agenda and individual assignments for specific due dates.
course materials and resources
Course materials such as video lessons, texts, links to flashcards, etc. will be posted on the Classwork page of Google Classroom. Additional resources for each unit will be posted in a "toolbox" at the top of the Classwork page.
cheating/plagiarism
Do your own work!!! If there is evidence that you cheated in any way, you WILL get a zero. Sharing your answers with others is cheating! Getting answers from others is cheating! Copying information from the internet (or any source) is cheating! Yes, even if you paraphrase it. If you need help, make sure you have read the directions, watched video lessons and/or Google Meet videos, and check the Unit Toolbox. You can also ask your teacher! That's why I make the big bucks (ha).
technical difficulties
FIRST, let me know. Maybe I can help. SECOND, contact the CCS help desk at https://ccs.desky.support/ or 910-499-0080. THIRD, keep me updated. Staying in contact helps me understand why you aren't completing assignments. ***You will NOT get an exception to turn in late work due to technical difficulties if you do not contact me BEFORE the assignment due date.
office hours
My office hours are 8:00 am - 3:00 pm every school day. If you try to contact me outside of these hours, I may not get back to you immediately. The best ways to get in touch with me are Remind, email, or Google Chat.
netiquitte
Netiquette is "the correct or acceptable way of communicating on the Internet." You are expected to be kind and respectful to ALL members of our class the same way you would be in person. Take the time to craft questions, responses, etc. that are polite and respectful to all.
tutoring
One-on-one and small group tutoring sessions are available upon request. Please send me a Remind message to schedule a private Google Meet. It it nearly impossible for me to know if you are struggling with assignments and/course materials if you do not tell me, especially since we may not be interacting face-to-face. You must be responsible for asking for help when you need it.
instructions
READ INSTRUCTIONS--every time, every assignment!!! If you complete an assignment incorrectly because you did not read instructions, you will not be allowed to redo it.
Google Meet expectations
Students are expected to attend Google Meet sessions on Tuesday and Thursdays. (1st period - 8:30 am / 2nd period - 10:00 am) To be counted present, you should be on time, stay the entire meeting, and participate verbally when appropriate--for example, asking and/or answering questions. Discussion is a key component of English Language Arts standards, so meetings are necessary to ensure student learning. The weekly agenda will list any preparations you should do ahead of the Meet. If you miss a Google Meet, you will be expected watch the video posted on the Classwork page and possibly complete a make-up assignment.
Google Classroom expectations
Students are expected to log into Google Classroom and complete assignments every school day. Check the agenda, watch video lessons, and complete assignments in the order that they appear.
tests/quizzes
Tests and quizzes will be available from 8 am - 11:59 pm on test day. Tests/quizzes may not be accepted late, and any late tests or quizzes accepted will lose at least 20% of overall points. Corrections are generally not offered quizzes. Corrections may be offered on some unit tests, but students should not assume that corrections will be allowed for all tests.
STREAM vs. CLASSWORK pages in Google Classroom
The STREAM page is used for general announcements and occasionally to message specific students; check the STREAM first, then move to the CLASSWORK page. The CLASSWORK page is where all assignments, course materials, weekly agendas, and resources are posted.
late work
Work turned in after the due date will lose 50% of total points. No work will be accepted more than 5 school days late.
grading
Your grade for each 9 week grading period will be averaged as follows: Classwork (task cards, general assignments, etc.) - 25% Quizzes and Tests (including projects, formal writing assignments, etc.) - 75%. Your final grade for the semester will be averaged as follows: Q3: 40% (ends 3/12/21) Q4: 40% (ends 5/21/21) EOC (final exam): 20% (***pending state of NC testing decisions for 2020-2021 school year)
