What are the different language rating forms used for children with hearing loss?

Teacher Assessment of Grammatical Language (TAGS), Teacher Assessment of Spoken Language (TASL)and Cottage Acquisition Scales for Listening, Language, and Speech (CASLLS)

Validity

The extent to which a test measures what it is designed to assess.

Standard score

The score in a norm-referenced assessment to compare one student's test performance to another.

What is the purpose of language sampling?

-Give a concrete sample of language to analyze. -Serve as a "jumping off" point for language evaluation and pinpoint areas for further investigation. -Gives a smattering of language. -If recorded, it can be used to evaluate speech.

Age equivalent

-An estimate of the child's ability on the test relative to a developmental level. -Tells the teacher the comparable age performance for that test score.

What does the Receptive One-Word Picture Vocabulary Test assess?

-Assesses an individual's ability to match a word that is heard to objects, actions, or concepts. -Ages 2-80+

What/who does the EVT assess?

-Expressive vocabulary skills -Ages 2.6-90+

What/who does the CASLLS assess?

-Looks at the degree and speed of a child's language progress. Uses same form to monitor changes in child's language. -0-8 years, or listening age.

What is the difference between something that is norm-referenced versus criterion referenced?

-Norm-referenced refers to standardized tests that are designed to compare and rank test takers in relation to one another. Typically comparing students of the same age or grade level, who have already taken the exam. -Criterion-referenced tests and assessments are designed to measure student performance against a fixed set of predetermined criteria or learning standards—i.e., concise, written descriptions of what students are expected to know and be able to do at a specific stage of their education.

-Pre-School Language Scale - Fourth Edition -Clinical Evaluation of Language Fundamental - Preschool 2 (CELF-P2) -Oral and Written Language Scales -Comprehensive Assessment of Spoken Language

What/who does the TAGS assess?

-Rates a child's understanding an use of various sentence lengths and structures. -CIPS

What/who does the PPVT assess?

-Receptive vocabulary skills. -Ages 2.6-90+

Scaled score

-Similar to standard score -refer to a child's performance on a subtest -Average range is typically 7-13 -Show areas of strength or weakness -Important to review these scores

What are the considerations and strategies for testing?

-Technology check -Positioning - sit across from child -Attention - make sure child is paying attention before you say the next question since you can't always repeat a question. -Environment - good listening environment. -Wait time -Visual processing time - give child a moment to look at all test items before asking the question -Acoustic highlighting

Percentile rank

-The percent of cases that are at or below a score. -A percentile rank of 50 means the student performed better than 50% of the children her age who took the same test - also an average result. So a student who scores 100 on the WISC is at the 50th percentile relative to same aged peers.

Grade equivalent

-a scale of measurement used to rate a student's progress in different academic areas in relation to other students.

Confidence interval

-a whole interval of acceptable values for the parameter is given instead of a single value, together with a likelihood that the real (unknown) value of the parameter will be in the interval. -indicates a range of values that's likely to encompass the true value.

What are some possible activities you could use to collect a language sample?

-could do an activity such as showing the child a picture and having them tell a story about it. -have a conversation with the child; listen and contribute, don't just interrogate and don't talk too much. -gather materials the child is interested in beforehand. Choose things that will elicit more conversation and that can be manipulated/controlled by the child (dolls, action figures, etc.)

What are the advantages of assessment for a child's teacher?

-helps measure success in reaching specific objectives. -provides objective evidence of progress -helps set benchmarks and evaluate progress toward those benchmarks -informs teachers and parents about ways to accelerate learning. -obtains a baseline of performance

Why should TOD be encouraged to use a rating form?

-helps the teacher lend some direction to teaching. -helps them keep the "big picture" in mind. -compare the child's progress to himself/herself rather than a normative sample. -the teacher is able to use the form to choose objectives for that specific child. -The forms are based on careful listening and observation of the child over a period of time. -Can use to record progress and helps teachers become better listeners.

What are the advantages of assessment for a child's parents?

-is their child making progress -how is their child comparing to other children with/without hearing loss

What/who does the CELF-5 assess?

Assess a broad range (8 subtests) of expressive and receptive language skills in school-aged children, all the way up to age 21.

What/who does the CELF P-2 assess?

Assesses a broad range of expressive and receptive language skills in preschool-aged children.

What/who does the TASL assess?

Documents the development of sentence structure in children with hearing loss (5 levels); school-aged.

What does the SPELT-3 assess?

Expressive syntax structures - 4-9.11 years

What does the SPELT-P2 assess?

Expressive syntax structures; 3-5.11 years

Reliability

The ability to repeat or replicate the measures included in the test.

Total number of items answered correctly or total number of points.
