Data marker

A chart symbol (such as a bar, line, dot, slice, and so forth) that represents a single data point or value from the corresponding worksheet cell.

A feature that speeds up the manual entry of functions.

Data series

A group of related information in a column or row of a worksheet that is plotted on a chart.

Axis

A horizontal or vertical line that establishes the relationship between data in a chart.

Legend

The formula for calculating a percentage by which a value increases by adding the base percentage—usually 100%—to the percent increase.

Value after increase = base x percent for new value

Major unit

The value in a chart's value axis that determines the spacing between tick marks and between the gridlines in the plot area.

Goal Seek

an Excel analysis tool that automates the trial and error process by specifying a value for a calculated item and then returning the input value needed to reach that goal

Data point

an item of factual information derived from measurement or research

Relative cell reference

cell reference that adjusts to a new location when copied or moved

Category Axis

horizontal axis of a chart, usually containing the names of data groups; in a 2-dimensional chart, also known as the x-axis

Value axis

horizontal or vertical grouping of values from the worksheet

Explode

increase rapidly and in an uncontrolled manner

Tick marks

lines of measurement along the value and category axes.

Bevel

Bevel is a function in graphic design software that, when applied to an image, gives the image the appearance of being raised out of the surface. A common example is buttons on websites. The appearance of the bevel is created by the application of lighter and darker colors to the image.

Absolute cell reference

Cell reference that does not adjust to the new cell location when copied or moved

Text box

Container for text that can be placed and formatted randomly
