Claudius

41 - 53 CE Opened senate up to provincial Brought southern Britannia (what is now Great Brittan) under Roman control, as well as several kingdoms in the east. Became Emperor because he was the last adult male of his family (Brother of Germanicus and uncle of Caligula). Conducted a census of the empire in 48 CE = 5,984,072 Roman Citizens

Nero

54 - 68 CE. Nero was considered a tyrant. He came to power after his mother allegedly poisoned his predecessor, Claudius. Nero murdered his mother and his step mother, step brother and two of his wives. He killed his teacher, Seneca. Nero was fored to commit suicide.

Vespasian

69 - 79 CE Built the coliseum (place where gladiator combats were held). First Jewish revolt occurred during his term (66 - 70 CE). The result was the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem, in the Roman province of Judea. The destruction was carried out by Vespasian's son, Titus. This was the second temple. The first temple had been built by King Solomon CA 960 BCE. It was destroyed by the Babylonians when they conquered the Jews and embarked on what became known as the Babylonian captivity. Vespasian was succeeded by his son Titus and then son Domitian.

Strengthened the Empire's defenses. Hadrian's wall separated Roman territory in Britannia from the Picts (in what is now Scotland). The war was led by Simon Bar Kokhba, a man believed to be the messiah. Jews lost and were forced to leave Jerusalem after the defeat. Many historians date this as the start of Jewish disportia.*?

The fire happened in 64 CE during the reign of Nero. Nero was accused of setting the fire and playing music while Rome burned. Nero blamed it on the Christians.
