Food chain terms
Prey
An organism that is killed and eaten by another organism
Secondary consumers
Secondary consumers eat primary consumers. They are carnivores and omnivores.
food chain
This is a hierarchy of organisms where the animals depend on the animals below it in the food chain for food
Carnivore
A carnivore is an animal that only eats meat. Some examples of carnivores are lions, alligators and shark
food web
A community of organisms where there are several interrelated food chains
Herbivore
A herbivore is an animal that eats only plants.
Tertiary Consumers
A tertiary consumer eats primary consumers and secondary consumers. Usually tertiary consumers are carnivorous predators, although they may also be omnivores.
Predator
An animal that hunts other animals for food
Apex predator
An apex predator has no natural predators
Omnivore
An omnivore is an animal that eats meat and plants. Bears, flamingoes and humans
Primary consumers
Primary consumers are in the second trophic level. Primary consumers are organisms that are herbivores.
Primary producers(autotrophs)
Primary producers make up most of the first trophic level. They produce their own food by using photosynthesis. Some examples of a primary producer are algae and plants.
Organism
Some sort of life form
Apex Predators
This animal is at the top of the food chain. It is a carnivore and has no predators.
Consumers(heterotrophs)
This is also in the first trophic level. A consumer is an organism that can not produce its own food so it eats another organism.
