Active vs. Passive Continental Margins

-Active continental margins are places where the edge of a continent is also the edge of a tectonic plate. -Passive continental margins are places where the edge of a continent is in the middle of a tectonic plate. These two types of plate margins are associated with very different geologic processes. At an active continental margin you will typically find a narrow continental shelf, a deep ocean trench, and volcanic and earthquake activity associated with subduction.
