"Women's Era"

30 year period where women couldn't vote but enjoyed greater economic opportunity. All states adopted laws giving married women control of own wages and right to sign separate contracts. 5 million women worked for wages by 1900

Platt Amendment

Amendment passed by Cuba for U.S. to acquire a permanent lease on naval stations in Cuba. Made Cubans mad on how they were treated. Cuba then leaves and U.S. is angry, causing a war

Lynching

Being killed by a mob. Between 1883-1905, 50 people per year were victims. This was done to get rid of leaders in African American culture. Forced many African Americans to run back to the African American part of towns.

Insular Cases

Court cases dealing with islands / countries that had been annexed and demanded rights of a citizen. Decided that the Constitution didn't always follow the flag, so they denied rights of a citizen to Puerto Ricans and Filipinos. Congress had that power

Plessy vs. Ferguson

Decision in 1896 by the Supreme Court. It was when a light skinned African American refused to sit in the African American section of the train and sat in the white area. He was arrested and taken to jail, but his case was taken to court. They ruled that African Americans were equal but had to be separated

U.S.S. Maine

First ship named after Maine and one of the first ships in U.S. navy. Helped America to create strong Navy and become a threatening power to the rest of the world

Immigration Restriction League

Group found in 1894 by Boston professionals that barred the illiterate from entering the U.S. Led to border conflicts of immigrants and people having difficulties in the modern age with border disputes. Also any immigrants not knowing lots of English

Kansas Exodus

Large migration for African Americans in 1879-1880 from the South to Kansas. To get potential equality, freedom from violence, and access to education and economic opportunity. Contributed to large expansion of people to the South. Gave Native Americans the ability to be free for a while

Coxey's Army

Led by Jacob Coxey, group of several hundred people out of work that marched to Washington in 1894 to demand economic relief. Led to government trying to bail out economy and putting people first. Led to the economic system we have today

"Yellow Press"

Named after William Hearst's New York Journal printed in yellow comic strip. Mixed sensational accounts of crime and corruption with aggressive appeals for patriotism

Alfred T. Mahan

Naval officer in the Influence of Sea Power Upon History in 1890 that argued that no nation could have power without a navy and a way to transport goods overseas. Led to large navy and mass trading across oceans

Anti- Imperialist League

Opponents of the U.S. becoming an imperial power. Believed that all of American energies should be used to keep the home front strong. Important because it created a feeling of being neutral in many wars and battles to come to become stronger later.

The Lost Cause

Phrase many white southerners applied to their Civil War defeat. Viewed war as a noble cause but only a temporary setback in the South's ultimate vindication

Open Door Policy

Policy of the U.S. that stated China should be open to all nations to trade with them. Didn't include consent of Chinese and was a form of imperialism

"Separate but equal"

Ruling of Plessy vs. Ferguson. Stated people had to be treated the same but kept separate on race. Led to a lot of segregation and racism for many more years

Washington's Atlanta Speech

Speech in 1895 by Booker T. Washington that said that blacks had to accept segregation in the short term as they focused on economic gain to achieve political equality in the future. Served as important role model for later leaders of the civil rights movement

"White man's Burden"

Started from poem by Rudyard Kipling that stated that it was a part of progress of civilization for whites to conquer nonwhites

Disenfranchisement

Took away blacks' rights to vote. In 1898, the Mississippi Supreme Court ruled in Williams vs. Mississippi that polled taxes and literacy tests to be legal

People's Party (Or Populists)

Took off where Knights of Labor left off and became the most famous worker's union. Included farmers and working class. Led to strikes and the fight for people to get treated decently

American Federation of Labor

Union of skilled laborers formed by Samuel Gompers in 1866. One of the most powerful unions in the U.S. Achieved success by avoiding larger political questions in favor of "bread and butter issues" like shorter workdays and higher wages for union members. Merged with Confederation of Industrial Organizations in 1955 to form AFL-CIO

"Free Silver"

Unrestricted minting of silver money in 1896. Led to depression because it downgraded the value of the dollar. The value of the dollar got to be higher
