Golf etiquette

Don't talk or move around when a player is about to hit the ball. All players should keep their distance from the golfer who is about to hit the ball. She should not be distracted by talking or movement by other players. 2. Replace any damage done to the course. If your golf club digs up a chunk of grass (divot) on a shot, put the grass back where it came from. Also, rake a sand trap smooth after stepping out of it. No practice swings can be taken in a sand trap. 3. The person farthest from the hole always hit first. Once on the green the same rule applies. Remember to place the flag back in the hole when completed so the next group knows where the hole is.

Lost or unplayable ball

If a ball is lost or out of bounds: the player may play his/her next stroke as near as possible at the spot from which he/she originally played the ball (add a penalty stroke to his/her score).

Water hazards

If a ball lies in or is lost in a water hazard, the player may drop a ball (with a penalty of one stroke) either as near as possible to the point from which the ball was played, or at the point in which the ball last crossed the margin

Equipment

There are many different types of golf clubs that a player can choose from. These clubs are designed to hit the ball varying distances and come with assorted degrees of loft to get the ball into the air. Clubs come with numbers on them; those with lower numbers are designed so the player can hit the ball a longer distance than the higher-numbered ones.

Provisional ball

To save time, when a ball is out of bounds or lost a player may play another ball from as near as possible to where the original ball was played. If original ball is not found the player must now play the provisional ball, if original ball is found it comes back into play without losing a stroke.

History of golf

a shepherd in Scotland hit a stone with a stick and watched the stone soar in the air. Thus the game of golf was born. Golf flourished in Scotland and later in England. The first golf balls used in England around the fifteenth century were called "feathery" because they were make of leather and stuffed with feathers.

Woods

are the clubs that propel a golf ball the farthest, from 200 to 350 yards, when used properly. At one time, the head was made of wood, nowadays, they are actually made of metals. The driver, or 1 wood, is the least lofted and is employed to hit the ball the farthest. Woods with the higher numbers are more lofted and can be used to hit the ball in the fairway or on a tee.

Wedges

are used to strike the ball and make it fly high into the air before landing on the putting surface. The clubs are lofted much higher than the others. Golf sets generally come with a pitching wedge and other wedges can be purchased separately.

Golf in America

became popular in America around 1895, when the first U.S. Open Tournament was held. The first 18 hole golf course opened in Wheaton, Il in 1893.

Irons

have clubheads made of metal are typically use by the golfer when the ball is fewer than 200 yards from the green. Numbered 1 through 9, the irons possess a higher degree of loft than the woods, with the 9 iron having the most. The normal golf set contains a 3 through 9 iron because the 1 and 2 irons are the most difficult to master.

Bogie

hitting the ball into the hole with one stroke more than par

Birdie

hitting the ball into the hole with one stroke under par

Ace

Eagle

Golf

is one of the most popular and fastest growing sport in many countries today. People of all ages can play golf, at many different levels of skill. Golf is also a great spectator sport. Thousands of viewers watch the sport on tv while thousands more follow their favorite golf pro to tournaments.

How is golf played

is played on a golf course. Full-sized courses have 18 holes, while smaller courses have only 9 holes. Golf clubs are used to hit the balls off the tees in the direction of the hole, which is on the what is called a "green" or "putting green." The area between the tee and the green is called the "fairway." Trees, lakes, streams, sand and other obstructions may be on either side of the fairway.

Putter

is the club that gets the most use. It is utilized to roll the ball along the green toward the hole. The heads of putters can be in the form of a flat blade or a mallet with a flat surface.

Object of the game

is to hit the ball off the tee, up the fairway, to the putting green, and into the hole with the fewest number of strokes possible. Each hole has a designated number of strokes. This designated number of strokes is called "par." Par can vary from three to five strokes, depending on the difficulty of the course and the distance of the hole from the tee.
