Imperialism in Asia
Extraterritoriality
European nations only tried in their own courts
Discuss why Japan was largely able to escape the effects of Imperialism while China was not.
Imperialism in Asia affected Japan and China greatly, however, the effects of imperialism only impacted China because Japan was able to escape it. China was very big and had a lot of materials. Many European nations wanted to have a sphere of influence in china, which meant they wanted trading rights and control in a part of china. Since china was not modern and the other nations were, the europeans had a bigger advantage over china so every time china tried to kick out the foreigners, they failed. Japan, on the other hand, was small and did not have as many materials as china does. They were also able to modernize, with help from America, so they were very strong and they could fight any nations that tried to come in. Japan's luck and skill both contributed to escaping the sphere of influence, however, China's traditional society and its high supply of raw materials, resulted in many spheres of influence being formed in the country.
How did the United States differ from most European countries in its Imperialism? Was the United States morally better in its approach?
Imperialism in Asia started with many nations, European mostly, going to China in search of land and raw materials. United States, however, was different from most of these countries. The United States have a lot of land and materials already, so they were not interested in more. United States was more interested in trading with them so two things then happened. The open door policy and the treaty of Kanagawa. Since many European countries had spheres of influence, an area in which a European nation has trading right and control in china, America felt shut out from china. United States then made the open door policy, which allowed them to trade anywhere in china. United States differs from the other nations in imperialism because they wanted to go to Japan. Most nations did not go to Japan because it is small and china has more things. United States, however, wanted to go to Japan because Japan looked up on them. The treaty of Kanagawa was then made, which made Japan and America allies and opened up trade with them. Japan then sent the Iwakura mission to America. The Iwakura mission was a mission where Japan sent people over to America to learn how to modernize. United stated was not good in its approach, even though they helped Japan greatly, they were unequal between China and Japan. America looked down on Japan because they were not modernized and they felt better then them, while America respected china because they had more land and materials.
