A group which consisted of Congress leaders such as K. Kamaraj (the Congress President) and Atulya Ghosh, N. Sanjeeva Reddy and S. Nijalingapa. In 1964 its leadership in the Congress weakened, divided and made the party faction-ridden.

Indira Gandhi

Daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first prime minister. She was also prime minister of India from 1966 tn 1977 (1917-1984) First woman elected as India's Prime Minister and was later assassinated. The Indian leader who attempted to control the massive population growth in India by ordering involuntary sterilization Indian prime minister who was influential in creating Bangladesh, an independent East Pakistan 1984 Prime minister of India, daughter of Nehru, ordered Indian army to oust Sikh terrorists from the Golden Temple, assassinated and her son Rajiv Gandhi took over and negotiated an accord with moderate Sikh leaders that included greater autonomy for Punjab and other concessions. Suspended the constitution and ruled under emergency laws. Allowed free elections in 1977 which resulted in her and her Congress party being thrown out of office. Assassinated 1984.

1967 General Elections

The fourth general elections to the Lok Sabha and the state assemblies, held in Feb. 1967. Characteristics: 1. People were disillusioned because of most of the corrupt Congress leader 2. People were Frustrated because there no other party to replace the Congress 3. Opposition parties campaigned mainly on the question of defeating Congress 4. There was a large turnout of voters at 61.1 percent, the highest witnessed so far suggesting that there was great political awakening.
