Internet of Things (IoT)
What does API stand for
Application Program Interface
What does each thing have/ makes it unique
Each thing is uniquely identifiable through its embedded computing system but is able to inter-operate within the existing infrastructure Each device has a unique address
Applications of IoT
Environmental Monitoring Infrastructure Management Manufacturing Energy Management Medical and Healthcare Systems Building and Home Automation Transportation
History of IoT
First coined by British entrepreneur Kevin Ashton in 1999 working at Auto-ID Labs. Cisco's John Chambers popularized it. The first application was as early as 1982, with a modified Coke machine at Carnegie Mellon University becoming the first internet-connected appliance, able to report its inventory and whether newly loaded drinks were cold.
What does IoTs integration with the Internet imply?
Integration with the Internet implies that devices will use an IP address as a unique identifier: IP v4, IP v6
IoT Equation
IoT = ET + NT + IT ET= Embedded Technology NT= Network Technology IT= Information Technology
Internet of Things (IoT)
It is the network of physical objects or "things" embedded with: Sensors, Software/Apps, Network connectivity: which enables these objects to collect and exchange data. Machine-to-machine (M2M) communication
Results of IoT
Large amounts of data from diverse locations are expected to be generated. Increase the need to better index, store and process such data. Rise of Big Data & Analytics
Intelligent Shopping Systems
Monitor specific users purchasing habits in a store by tacking their specific mobile phones. These users could then be provided with special offers on their favorite products. Or even location of items that they need, which their refrigerator has automatically conveyed to the phone.
The IoT allows
Objects to be sensed and controlled remotely across existing network infrastructure (the internet) Opportunities for more direct integration between the physical world and computer-based systems, and resulting in improved efficiency, accuracy and economic benefit
Concerns of IoT
Privacy, Autonomy, and Control Security: DDOS attacks, Intrusion
Two Main Functions of IoT devices
Sense Actuate
Classifications of IoT
Smart Wearable Smart Home Smarty City Smart Environment Smart Enterprise Smart Government
What is Micro-electro-mechanical Systems(MEMS)
They are computer chips with moving parts that are typically divided into sensor and actuators
Technologies of IoT
Wireless communication: Wi-Fi & Bluetooth The Internet
