Peer to peer networks

a type of computer networking in which all computers share an equal responsibility for processing data. Common on small LANS particularly home networks

ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers)

assigns IP addresses

Cellular Internet Service

smartphones are the most common means to access the internet, signals sent using radio waves

WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy)

the original security protocol for WiFi networks.

Transmission Media

the term transmission media describes the means by which the internet signal is carried. Ex, telephone lines, fiber optic cable, etc.

IP Address

when you log on to the internet from your home computer, your internet service provider assigns this to your router. Allows other computers on the internet to send data to your home computer

Router

wired only, using ethernet cables to connect the router to computers. Transmits a WiFi signal so that you can connect computers to the router wirelessly. Include a device called a switch. (connects two networks)

Wifi

"wireless fidelity" transmission of internet signals using radio waves

Setting up a home network

1. Connect the line to the modem & plug in the modem 2. Connect the modem to the router & plug in the router 3. Turn on your computer and find the new WiFi signals

SSID (Service Set Identifier)

Every WiFi signal is recognized by this. Transmit this every few seconds so that someone roaming for a WiFi signal can find it. Disabling it makes it harder for "piggybacks" to use your bandwidth

Microwaves

Another transmission medium for internet signals, used to transmit signals over extremely long distances, including to and from satellites (used in remote rural areas, in mobile homes, RVs, etc)

Electronic Data Interchange (EDI)

Communication standards for business transaction. Allows for exchange of data for making purchase orders and invoices

Switch

Connect devices that are within the same network. Ensures that the correct data is sent to and from the correct device within the network

WPA2

Current WiFi security encryption standard

Broadband

Fiber optic, cellular, DSL, Cable, Satellite

Fiber optic

Light waves, minimal electromagnetic interference, used to connect continents through the use of cables running across the ocean's floor

Packet switching

Method for transferring information that differs from circuit switching because data transfer doesn't reply on a dedicated physical path

Dual-band router

Piece of networking equipment is Wi-Fi capable uses both shorter and higher frequency signals to transmit data

Firewall

Security system separating 2 networks or even computers on the same network. Protect internal networks and computers from intrusions

Satellite Internet

Service makes broadband internet available virtually everywhere. Uses microwaves to transmit and receive internet signals to satellites orbiting the earth's equator (data plan)

Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT)

Technical term for electronic or online banking

WPA (WiFi Protected Access)

short-lived security standard

Circuit switching

Used by the public switched telephone network (PSTN) and creates a dedicated physical path to send and receive information

Bandwidth

Volume of data that can be carried by a transmission medium each second. Varies by the capability of the transmission medium. Measured in Megabits per second

LAN (local area network)

a collection of computers that are connected in a small geographic area such as an office, college campus, or in your home. Ethernet is the most popular networking of LANs.

Server relationship

a computer that provides resource and services to client computers that requests them

Client relationship

a computer that requests resources such as a web page, spreadsheet, image file, or services from another computer on a network

Intranets

a network that is controlled by an organization, accessible only by members of the organization and others who have proper authorization. often has info such as payroll, human resources data, etc

Extranet

a part of an intranet that is accessible to outside users who have the proper authorization. Allows suppliers access to their intranet to view inventory levels

Coaxial

cable is comprised of a single copper wire with a braided wire shield, wrapped in insulation

Ethernet

cable is specifically designed to connect computers and digital devices

Twisted pair

common telephone wire is comprised of a pair of thin copper wires within an insulated cover, twisting helps their electromagnetic fields to cancel each other out so there's minimal interference

Ethernet cable

computer cable, connects computers and digital devices

Remote access

connections must be secured using authentication and encryption software

VPN (virtual private network)

creates a secure connection between 2 computers

Network

group of two or more devices/computers connected together to allow for the exchange and information and for sharing of resources such as printers

Dual Band Router

higher frequency signals transmit more data and have less interference, but travel shorter distances. Ex, bluetooth devices, car alarms, etc

Modem

internet signals travel in waves. Changes the incoming modulated signals into digital signals, and changes outgoing digital signals into modulated signals

WAN (Wide Area Network)

large organizations with many offices located across the globe often have individual LANs in each location that need to be connected in order to share data and information. Two or more LANs connected together

Static IP addresses

organizations have permanently assigned IP addresses
