Social contract implies that the relationship between governed and government is based on a contract (see benefits of having a gov't)

Who was he/what did he own?

Southerner Was a large slave owner. Owned enormous cotton planations and was sentator of the United States. After resigning office he lives his life to promote southern Unity.

What was his theory?

The theory of Nullification = If the federal gov't is going to pass a law that will hurt one of the states, that state has a right to state to say I don't have to accept it. According to him if the gov't had a new constitutional amendment passed, states (S. Carolina) had the choice of saying no.

Why? Where?

This was all in consequence of high tariffs that the US govt was putting on imported goods which hurt the middle class (especially in the South where agriculture is the main economy.
