Functional classification

the classification of how the joints move. 3 types: 1. synarthrosis. 2. amphiarthrosis. 3. diarthrosis.

What is the criteria of the structural classification of joints ?

based on 2 things: 1. the synovial cavity: the amount of space between the articulating bones. 2. the type of connective tissue that binds the bones together.

cartilaginous joints

-no synovial cavity. -the bones are held together by cartilage.

Fibrous joints

-no synovial cavity. -the bones are held together by dense irregular connective tissue. -rich in collagen fibres.

synovial joints

-there is a synovial cavity. -the bones unite by the dense irregular connective tissue of an articular capsule, often by accessory ligaments.

diarthrosis (diarthroses)

a freely movable joint.

amphiarthrosis (amphiarthroses)

a slightly movable joint.
