Now that you finished this unit, complete a final reflection on the elements of music. In three sentences, describe how you will use the information you learned in this unit to evaluate music.
In this unit, I learned about the elements of music. The elements of music include: tone quality/timbre, expression/phrasing, pitch accuracy, blend/balance, diction/articulation, style, and stage presence. These things are what are used to properly evaluate and critique music. I will use these terms moving forward in this class, and even after, to evaluate the quality of a piece of music. This unit taught me that good stage presence is when a performer has the audiences' full attention during a performance. I also learned in this unit that diction is the pronunciation of words while singing, and that timbre is the term for the quality of a musical sound.

Use the information provided to discuss how the Beatles changed America and how they directly changed American music and culture of the music we listen to today. Write one paragraph, and be sure to use your own words.
It is well known that the Beatles are one of the most musically influential people that this country has ever seen. One of the many ways that the Beatles changed this country was by their hair. The Beatles all rocked long hair cuts, which were previously not very cool. The Beatles made this hairstyle cool and normal, instead of just a select few men having longer hair. Another thing that they made more popular in America was psychedelic drugs. They encouraged people to go out and try these drugs so they could have cool and new experiences. One other thing that the Beatles made wildly popular in our country was the music video. Before them, music videos were not very common or popular. The Beatles used their film titled "A Hard Day's Night" to make some music videos. The film features a scene with the song "Can't Buy Me Love" in the background that could be considered an early music video. Nowadays, we see music videos for most popular songs.

How do you think the song "Respect" helped inspire women's rights? What lyrics spoke to you about women's rights? How do you think these lyrics spoke to women of the 1960s?
Aretha Franklin did a lot in trying to get equal rights for women. Many of her songs were about power and equality for women. I think that "Respect" helped inspire women's rights because of the passion and content of the song. When Aretha sang this song, she gave it so much life and passion and you could hear her struggles, hopes, and dreams all coming out at once. When she sang this song, she demanded respect for herself and all women. Aretha Franklin's performance of "Respect" is so moving and inspirational. This song makes me feel empowered and like I can do anything. I love that she took a song originally written by and performed by a man and turned it into an anthem for women's rights and equality. I think the women in the 1960s felt the same way that I felt. I think that they felt inspired and wanted to take action.
Write a short essay on the life and career of Buddy Holly. You need two full paragraphs with at least five sentences per paragraph. Focus your essay on how both Holly's career and death made an impact on the music industry. Be sure to use complete sentences and submit the assignment when you are done.
Buddy Holly was born on September 7, 1936 in Lubbock, TX. He was born with the name Charles Hardin Holley and later became known professionally as Buddy Holly. He had a great but short career before his life was sadly and suddenly taken on February 3, 1959 in a plane crash. He was successful both in life and death, and made a great impact in his 22 short years on earth. Throughout his short lived career, Buddy accomplished many things. Buddy grew up learning about music and could play piano and violin at a young age. In 1957 in Lubbock, Buddy formed a group called "The Crickets". Together, the band made history by being the first white group to perform at the Apollo Theater in New York City. Some of the band and Buddy's most popular songs include the following: "That'll Be the Day", "Maybe Baby", "Oh, Boy!", and "Peggy Sue". In 1959, Buddy was on a tour called "The Winter Dance Party tour" along with Richie Valens and The Big Bopper. The three of them decided to take a plane to their next show instead of ride the freezing cold tour bus. The plane sadly crashed shortly after leaving the airport and killed all who were aboard. After his death, Buddy's fame did not go away, at least not at first. Buddy recorded plenty of music so for a while after his death, music of his was still being released. He also received awards after his death. In 1997, he received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and in 1999 he was inducted in the Grammy Hall of Fame for his song, Peggy Sue. Holly was even given a star on the Hollywood walk of fame in 2011.

Describe what you feel Woodstock was like. Describe what you think the scene looked like. Would you have gone to Woodstock? Why or why not? Describe similarities and differences between musicians at Woodstock with musicians following the typical style of Rock & Roll.
I feel that Woodstock would have been a crazy and wild place, but at the same time been very peaceful. I imagine that the scene was quite intense. There were probably lots of people everywhere, most of which were on drugs. I imagine that people would have been bumping into each other and falling over each other while trying to get from place to place. Personally, I would not have wanted to go to Woodstock. I think that it would have been too many people to be around. Woodstock and the typical style of Rock & Roll at that time were similar in that they both had lots of attention and eyes on them. These were some of the most popular things at this time and everyone was keeping up with and watching them. These things were different in that one was calm and one was not. Rock and roll was about going crazy, letting losse, and having fun. On the other hand, Woodstock was about being calm and loving.

I feel that this piece was very well performed. The Boston Pops Orchestra did a wonderful job on the piece and represented what the piece was made for in their performance. The timbre of the piece felt deep and harsh. The orchestra seemed very in tune and played all the notes as they were supposed to be played. The piece blended very well and the change between instruments was seamless. The Orchestra also had a strong stage presence. They played their instruments confidently and captured the audience's attention.
Discuss whether you support music streaming or whether you are against it. Be sure to use complete thoughts and sentences, and explain the reasoning behind your thoughts.
I support music streaming. Even though artists are not getting paid as much for streamed songs than for downloaded songs, the marketing and money made other places makes up the difference. Many people nowadays don't listen to a song on their phone if they have to buy it. People want to be able to download it for free. By people being able to do this, they get familiar with the artist and may eventually buy an album or go to a concert. This would make up the money that the artist lost by the song being streamed not bought.

Compare and contrast the performances: write at least 3 sentences explaining what is similar in the performances and 3 sentences explaining the differences about the two performances.
Similarities//These performances are similar in very few ways. The main similarity in these performances is that they are of the same song and they are both performed in front of many people for an organized event. Another important similarity of the performances is that the performers both chose to hold out the note on the last word of the song. Differences//These performances are very different and each is very unique. The performances are different in that they follow a different pace, contain different amounts of vocal control, and are presented in a very different way. The first performer shows very little vocal control, sings the song at a slow pace, and is singing a cappella. While the second performer, has very good vocal control, performs at a much faster pace, and is accompanied by an orchestra.
In a discussion post, compare characteristics of different Jazz forms (Swing, Blues, Bebop) and find qualities that are common among the various forms and qualities that are different. Use your knowledge from Unit 1 to adequately describe the music heard and your opinion.
The jazz forms of swing, blues, and bebop are all very different, but still alike in some ways. Additionally, swing and bebop music both have fast tempos while blues music has a very slow tempo.

Write at least 4 sentences total, incorporating every musical element.
The performances are quite different, but they do share a few things. In both of these performances of "The Star Spangled Banner", the performers have a loud tone quality and both projected their voices very well. Although the tones of the two performances are similar, the expression is very different. The first performer sings the song slowly, while the second performer sings much faster. The pitch accuracy also differs greatly between the performers. The first performer seems to be off pitch, while the second performer seem in tune. Among these many differences they have one more thing in common, they both have a strong stage presence. Both performers have a strong commanding stage presence that makes the audience listen to them. Another difference is the diction or articulation of the song in the performances. The first performer seems choppy while singing and does not do a great job at articulating the notes and lyrics of the song. On the other hand, the second performers' articulation is very clear and easy to understand. The last difference between the two performances is the style. The first performances is very unique and personal, while the second performance is very traditional.
