Stages in information processing

(exposure, attention, interpretation, STM, LTM)

Subliminal perception

-perceiving a stimulus without being aware of it. It involves the unconscious as the stimulus is enough for the brain to identify it but we are unable to know when its presented.

LTM

-portion of total memory devoted to permanent information storage -unlimited permanent storage -SEMANTIC - (basic knowledge and feelings an individual has about a concept; Acura = luxury car) -EPISODIC - (memory of a sequence of events; first date, graduation, learning to drive) -FLASHBULB - ( acute memory for the circumstances surrounding a surprising and novel event; vividly detailed)

STM

-working memory; portion of total memory that is currently activated or in use; - immediate decision making -limited capacity to store info, active and dynamic process memory span for prices is 3.7 secs

What "rules or guidelines" do we use to interpret stimuli? (examples)

1.Meaning assigned 2.Interpret stimuli w/ expectations 3.Proximity 4.similarity 5.closure 6.personal characteristics 7.gestalt

information processing

is a series of activities by which stimuli are perceived, transformed into information and stored.

interpretation

is the assignment of meaning to sensations

exposure

occurs when a stimulus comes within the range of someone's sensory receptors

attention

occurs when the stimulus activates one or more sensory receptor nerves and the resulting sensations go to the brain for processing
