MIS: Chapter 1
Cloud Computing
- A model of computing in which local devices access applications and storage on remote servers, usually over the internet
Database
-A large collection of electronic records
Digital System
-A system that uses two digits -Capable of delivering data and information (quantities, sound, text, pictures and video) -Original information can be re-created w/ complete accuracy i.e. Computers and related devices
System
-An array of components that woke together to achieve a common goal or multiple goals by accepting input, processing it and producing output in an organized manner
Process
-Any manipulation of data, usually with the goal of producing information
Subsystems
-Components of a larger system -Sub goals all contributing to meeting the mail goal -Can receive input from and transfer output to other systems or subsystems
Information Systems
-Consists of all the components that work together to process data and produce information. - Almost all business information systems consist of many subsystems with subgoals all contributing to the organization's main goal
Information
-Facts or conclusions that have meaning within a context
Data
-Given or fact -Take the form of a number, statement or picture -Raw Material in the production of information -To become information this is manipulated through tabulation and stat analysis
Raw Data
-Rarely meaningful or useful information
Closed Systems
-Stands alone - nothing flows in from another system; nothing flows out to another system
Information Technology
-a term that refers to all technologies that collectively facilitate construction and maintenance of information systems
Open System
-interfaces and interacts with other systems -i.e. an accounting system that records A/R, A/P, and cash flow is open if it receives payroll figures from the payroll system
Information Map
-the description of data and information flow with in an organization- shows a network of information subsystems that exchange information with each other and with the world outside the system
Characteristics of Useful Information
1. Relevant 2. Complete 3. Accurate 4. Current 5. Economical
