Mercenaries
1) A mercenary is a soldier for hire. 2) It was a disadvantage for Great Britain to hire foreign soldiers because they weren't loyal, I think that because if they aren't loyal then they aren't really going to care what happens. 3) Great Britain hired Germans from the town Hesse. 4) The soldiers came from Hesse.
Bernardo de Galvez
1) Bernardo de Galvez was the governor of Spanish Louisiana. 2) He gathered a small army of Spanish soldiers and seized many British posts. 3) He made Britain go south.
Battle of Saratoga
1) Bourgoyne was supposed to meet Howe but Howe had gone somewhere else. 2) General Horatio Gates was the leader of the Continental Army. 3) The Patriots won and Howe resigned his position as a British commander. French and Spain also joined the war on the Patriots side.
Battle of Long Island
1) Britain won the battle. 2) The Continental Army lost because they were outnumbered. 3) Washington worried that he would lose his army.
General William Howe
1) General William Howe was a british general who led many armies in the war. 2) He thought just the size of his army should make the Patriots want to give up.
Marquis de Lafayette
1) He was a young Frenchman who volunteered to fight the British without pay. 2) He believed that the Patriots were right about how people should be treated.
Friedrich von Steuben
1) He was an officer from Prussia who trained the Continental Army. 2) He trained the entire army so they could fight better then they ever would without him.
John Paul Jones
1) John Paul Jones was an American Naval Officer. 2) His ship was named Bonhomme Richard. 3) He fought the British shipped named Serapis. 4) The Patriots won that battle and it's known as John Paul Jones's most famous victory.
Nathan Hale
1) Nathan Hale was a young teacher who went to Britain to obtain secret information. 2) Hale was a spy. 3) He was captured and executed by the British. 4) His famous quote was "I regret that I have but one life to lose for my country"
