- facial expressions - assists in smiling, blowing and chewing

- facial expressions - draws mouth upward when laughing
frontalis
- facial expressions - raises eyebrows upward or when showing surprise
orbicularis oculi
- facial expressions - closes the eye when blinking or squinting
orbicularis oris
- facial expressions - closes the mouth and purses the lips, such as when kissing
trapezius
- move the head - extends the head (such as when looking upward) and flexes the head to one side - elevates the shoulder
sternocleidomastoid
- move the head - flexes the head - sometimes called the praying muscle - rotates the head to the opposite side when only one muscle contracts

- pulling down the mandible, which opens the mouth - pulling the corners of the lips out to the side and down, which forms a frown
