Colectomy= surgical removal of colon. Colostomy= creation of stoma from section of colon. Ileostomy= creation of stoma from section of ileum. Foods that causes an obstruction, gas or odors Stoma= surgically created opening.

Diverticulosis= presence of pockets. Diverticulitis= when the pocket get inflamed. Increase in fiber. Nuts, popcorn, and seeds.

Gradually increasing fiber intake, laxatives, prune juices, adequate fluid intake, and medical treatment.
What is Crohn's and ulcerative colitis?
IBD. Crohn's can occur in any region of the GI tract. Mucosa has a cobblestone appearance. Skip lesions Ulcerative colitis always starts in the rectum and moves up. The colon appears inflamed and reddened and ulcer are visible.
What is constipation and what could cause constipation?
Less than three bowel movement a week. Low fiber, low activity, medical and neurological conditions, pregnancy, medication and drugs.
What is osmotic diarrhea and secretory diarrhea and what causes each?
Osmotic= nutrient malabsorption. Caused when poorly absorbed sugar attracts water to colon increasing fecal water content. Secretory= intestines stimulate to secrete excessive fluid into colon. Caused by bacterial food poisoning, chemical substances, or the inflammation associated with some intestinal diseases.

What are prebiotics and probiotics and give examples of each?
Prebiotics= stimulate the growth or activity of resident bacterial of large intestine. Ex.Fruits, veggies, and whole grain. Probiotics= live bacteria provided in foods and dietary supplements for the purpose of preventing or treating disease. Ex. Yogurt and acidophilus milk

Requires little dietary adjustment. In serious situations, manage symptoms.
