Adnexa

Area located posterior to the broad ligaments, adjacent to the uterus. Contains the ovaries & Fallopian tubes.

Radial arteries

Arteries that supply blood to the deeper layers of the myometrium.

Iliopsoas muscles

Bilateral muscles located lateral to the uterus & anterior to iliac crest.

Uterine arteries

Branches of the internal iliac artery that supplies blood to the uterus, ovaries, & Fallopian tubes.

Spirial arteries

Coiled arteries that supply blood to the functional layer of the endometrium.

Uterine prolapse

Condition that results from the weakening of the pelvic diaphragm muscles & allows for the displacement of the uterus, often through the vagina.

External iliac arteries

External branches of the common iliac arteries.

Space of Retzius

Extraperitoneal space located between the bladder and symphysis pubis that contains fat

Pelvic diaphragm

Group of pelvic muscles consisting of the levator ani & coccygeous muscles that provides support to the pelvic organs.

Levator ani muscles

Hammock-shaped pelvic muscle group located between the coccyx & pubis. Consisting of iliococcygeus, pubococcugeus, & puborectalis.

abdominal aorta

Major abdominal artery responsible for supplying the abdomen, pelvis, & lower extremities with oxygenated blood.

Obtutator internus muscles

Paired pelvic muscles located lateral to the ovaries.

Piriformis muscles

Paired pelvic muscles located posteriorly tat extends from the sacrum to the femoral greater trochanter.

suspensory ligament of ovary

Pelvic ligament that provides support to the ovary. Extends from the ovaries to the pelvic side walls.

Ovarian ligament

Pelvic ligament that provides support to the ovary. Extends from the ovary to the lateral surface of the uterus.

Actuate arteries

Peripheral arteries of the uterus that lie at the edge of the myometrium.

vesicouterine pouch

Peritoneal recess between the bladder and uterus. aka: Anterior cul-de-sac

Rectouterine pouch

Peritoneal recess located between the uterus & rectum. aka: Posterior cul-de-sac & pouch of Douglas.

Posterior cul-de-sac

Rectouterine pouch or pouch of Douglas

False pelvis

Superior portion of the pelvis.

Straight arteries

Uterine radial artery branch that supplies blood to the basal layer of the endometrium.

Rectus abdominis muscles

Paired anterior abdominal muscles that extend from the xiphoid process of the sternum to the pubic bone.

Anterior cul-de-sac

The peritoneal pouch between the anterior wall of the uterus and the posterior wall of the bladder. aka: vesicouterine pouch.

common iliac arteries

abdominal aortic bifurcation vessels

Linea terminalis

Imaginary line that separates the true & false pelvis.

true pelvis (lesser)

Inferior portion of the pelvis that contains the uterus, ovaries, Fallopian tubes, urinary bladder, small bowel, sigmoid colon & rectum.

Internal iliac arteries

Internal branches of the common iliac arteries.

Broad ligaments

Pelvic ligament that extends from the lateral aspect of the uterus to the side walls of the pelvis.

Cardinal ligament

Pelvic ligament that extends from the lateral surface of the cervix to the lateral fornix of the vagina. Contains the uterine vasculature.

coccygeus muscle

Pelvis muscle located posteriorly within the pelvis that helps support the sacrum.
