Qualities of a Good Citizen
Use natural resources wisely
1. Don't overuse / waste anything. 2. Do not throw away products that are reusable or recyclable 3. We use plants for food, clothing, and many other uses. We use trees to make paper products, but we also harvest wood for building materials and to make furniture. 4. We use animals like cattle for food and dairy products, but we also rely on them for leather.
Take part in and improve the life in their community
1. Serve meals or organize clothing donations at a place for homeless people 2. Help an organization send care packages to soldiers stationed overseas 3. Volunteer to run errands for people with disabilities
Are loyal to their country and proud of its accomplishments
1. Supporting the US Olympic Team and its members throughout the Olympics 2. Support the US military and its members home and abroad. 3. Proud of how the United States has led the world in spreading democracy around the world.
Respect and obey the property of others
1. Don't take things that do not belong to you. 2. Don't destroy our harm others personal property or land. 3. Don't try to enter others homes without permission.
Respect and obey the laws of the lands
1. Obey the federal and local laws that are passed 2. Respect the people who enforce these laws 3. If you feel that a law is unjust meet with your representatives or run for office to make the change
Are well informed on important issues and are willing to take a stand on these issues
1. Being well informed allows citizens to make more intelligent decisions. 2. Knowing both sides of the issue allows the citizen to take a stand for the issues they support with confidence 3. Use facts, not opinions to understand the issues at hand
Take an active part in their government
1. By voting in local, state, and national elections 2. By attending meetings to gain information, discuss issues or lend support 3. By running for political office.
Believe in equality of opportunity for all
1. Conservative View - All humans possess inherently equal rights and should, therefore, be treated equally before the law 2. Liberal View - People must all be given the same opportunities—no one may have more opportunities than someone else. Under this belief, when one is born in a city where some people have more opportunities than others, it is the duty of government to equalize them, by taking resources from the well-off and giving them to the less well-off. 3. Libertarian View - Each person has a right to engage in any activity that is peaceful and honest and welcome the diversity that freedom brings. The world we seek to build is one where individuals are free to follow their own dreams in their own ways, without interference from government or any authoritarian power.
Responsible Family Members
1. Mother, father, or both are expected to teach, discipline, and provide financially, emotionally, and physically for their children. 2. Children are expected to cooperate and respect their parents. 3. As family members age, they take on additional roles, such as becoming a spouse, parent, or grandparent. 4. A person's role is always expanding or changing, depending upon his or her age and family stage.
Respect individual differences, points of view, and ways of life different than their own
1. No one should discriminate another person based on race, gender, religion. 2. No one should discriminate another person's way of life different from their own. 3. Whether liberal or conservative, you should be willing to listen to both sides of the issue without degrading the others beliefs even if they are not yours.
