Ratio Unit Vocabulary

Plot

To draw on a graph or map.

Conversion

A change in the form or units of an expression. A change in the form of a measurement, different units, without a change in the size or amount.

Double Number Line

A number line with a scale on top and a different scale on the bottom so that you can organize and compare items that change regularly according to a rule or pattern.

Units

A quantity used as a standard of measurement.

Part-to-Part Ratio

A ratio where 2 parts are compared to one another.

Part-to-whole Ratio

A ratio where one part of the total is compared to the total.

Percent

A ratio whose second term is 100. Means parts per 100.

Ratio

A relationship between two quantities, normally expressed as the quotient of one divided by another. A comparison of two numbers or measurements.

Rate

A special ratio in which the two terms are in different units. Compares measurements of two different types.

Tape Diagram

A visual model that uses rectangles to represent the parts of a ratio.

Equation

A written statement indicating the equality of two expressions.

Proportion

An equation stating that two ratios are equal. A statement showing that one ratio is equal to another.

Coordinate Plane

The plane determined by a horizontal number line, called the x-axis, and a vertical number line, called the y-axis, intersecting at a point called the origin. Each point in this plane can be specified by an ordered pair of numbers.

Unit Rate

The ratio of two measurements, in which the second term (denominator) is 1. The second quantity in the comparison is 1 unit.

Cross-multiplication

Two equal products obtained by multiplying the second term of each ratio by the first term of the other ratio in a proportion. You take each denominator aCROSS the "equals" sign and MULTIPLY it on the other fraction's numerator.

Ratio reasoning

Using ratio language to describe a ratio relationship between two quantities.

Equivalent Ratio

When two ratios have the same value when simplified.
