Rational Numbers Review Quiz
Inverse Property of Multiplication
for every non-zero number n, n * (1/n) = 1. (note the non-zero part is important or else we would be dividing by zero and we are not allowed to do that); division is the inverse operation of multiplication and do the reciprocal (i.e. 5 x 1/5 = 1)
Inverse Property of Addition
for every number n, n + (-n) = 0; subtraction does the inverse or undoes the operation of addition (i.e. 7 + -7 = 0)
irrational numbers
numbers that cannot be written as integers or ratios (i.e. pi, square root of 2; square root of 3)
integers
positive and negative numbers and zero; no fractions, percentage, or decimals (i.e.-2; -1; 0; 6)
natural numbers
positive numbers that does not include 0, fractions, percent, or decimals (i.e. 1; 24; 650)
whole numbers
positive numbers that include zero; does not include fractions, percent, or decimals (i.e. 0; 100; 750)
absolute value
the distance from zero on the number line which will always be a positive number (numbers are represented in a bracket i.e.:[3] = 3; [-45] = 45; -[25] = -25
Commutative Property of Addition
the order in which two or more numbers are added does not affect the answer or the sum. i.e. 6 +4 = 4 + 6; a + b = b + a; 2 + 3 + 9=9+3+2
Identity Property of Multiplication
the product of 1 and any number or variable is the number or variable itself (i.e. 4 × 1 = 4; - 11 × 1 = - 11; y × 1 = y)
Zero Property of Multiplication
the product of any number times zero is zero (i.e. 92 x 0 = 0; 589 x 0 = 0)
Identity Property of Addition
the sum of zero and any number or variable is the number or variable itself. (i.e. 43 + 0 = 43; - 11 + 0 = - 11; y + 0 = y)
Commutative Property of Multiplication
The order in which two or more numbers are multiplied does not affect the answer or product. i.e. 5 x 4=4 x 5; 8 x 5 x 99=99 x 5 x8
Associative Property of Addition
When three or more numbers are added, changing the way numbers are grouped does not change the answer or sum. i.e. (3 + 7) + 9 = 3 + (7 + 9); a + (b + c)=(a + b) + c
Associative Property of Multiplication
When three or more numbers are multiplied, changing the way numbers are grouped does not change the answer or product. i.e. (3 x 5) x 2 = 3 x (5 x 2); a * (b * c) = (a * b) * c
rational numbers
a number that can be expressed as a fraction or ratio of integers; all rational numbers can be represented by either decimal numbers that terminate (i.e. 3/4 = .75; 0.5 = 1/2; 8 = 8/1; 1/8 = 0.125) or non-terminating/repeating decimals (i.e. 2/3 = 0.666666...; -4/11 = -0.3636363636...
real numbers
a number that can be expressed as a fraction, ratio of integers; all the numbers in between on the number line; all rational and irrational numbers (i.e. -2.5; -5/9; 0, 3/4; .95; 9)
square root
A number that, when multiplied by itself, produces the given number; an inverse operation of squaring a number
