Apply antibiotic cream and a dry, sterile dressing if ordered by the provider.

Explain wound care and provide written instructions; arrange follow-up appointment if necessary.

Check patient's vital signs if indicated.

Dispose of sutures/staples on a gauze sponge and examine the wound to be certain all have been removed.

Dispose of used items per OSHA guidelines.

Document procedure in patient's medical record and patient teaching.

If removing staples: Gently apply instrument to the staple. Gently squeeze the handle until staple is pinched outward and upward. Pull up.

If removing sutures: Using thumb forceps gently pick up one knot of a suture and pull toward suture line to loosen.

Introduce yourself, identify patient and explain to the patient the rationale for performance of the procedure. Show awareness of the patient's concerns related to the procedure being performed.

Open suture or staple removal kit.
Step 10
Remove all sutures/staples in the same manner, noting number removed.

Remove bandage and dispose in biohazard.
Step 14
Remove gloves and wash hands.

Remove gloves and wash hands.

Using suture removal scissors cut one side of the suture as close to skin as possible. Pull toward the wound to remove.
