What was the south's justification for slavery in the Missouri territory?
If slavery couldn't expand, the free states could outlaw slave-holding in the senate.
Bleeding Kansas
An opposition government created by free soil forces caused two forces to clash. A new governor and constitutional convention admitted Kansas into the union as a free state in 1861.
How did Oregon enter the union?
Britain and the U.S divided it at 49th parallel in 1849.
The Compromise of 1850
California to be a free state, Utah and NM would decide on their own whether to be free or a slave state. In District of Columbia, the slave-trade is abolished but not slavery. Fugitive slave law-escaped slaves must be returned.
The Dred Scott Decision (1857)
Dred was in Missouri then taken to Illinois where slavery was illegal, when he went back to MO he demanded his freedom. Supreme court declared MO compromise unconstitutional b/c the fifth amendment prohibited depriving people of private property.
Nebraska
Further north and land was not fertile for cash crops. Admitted as a free state in 1861.

The Missouri Compromise 1820
Maine became a free state in exchange for Missouri to become a slave state. All the states above the southern border of Missouri are free.
Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo 1850
Mexican-American war due to Texas becoming a state because of the dispute over whether Texas ended at the Nueces river (mexican) or Rio grande (U.S). War ended with U.S victorious and 500k sq. miles of Mexican territory came from treaty.
Missouri entering state-hood
Missouri wanted to become a slave-state. Northerners opposed this because it would unbalance the senate and would be neighboring free states. Maine became a free state in exchange for Missouri to become a slave state.
Lincolns Election 1860
Opposed slavery but didn't touch it. Believed that the U.S shouldn't be have slave and half free. It should be all one thing or all the other.
Kansas Nebraska Act 1854
Plan to build a transcontinental railroad from Chicago to the Pacific. Kansas and Nebraska decides to be a free or slave state. Pro-slavery forces used violence to fraud Kansas as a slave state.
Why did the north think Missouri becoming a slave state was wrong?
They opposed human bondage and believed it was morally wrong.
Money from cotton
Southerners used it to buy goods/services from the north. Northerners used it to make money from clothes.
How did Texas enter the union?
The Republic of Texas voted for annexation by the U.S and six months later it was admitted as a state.
What is manifest destiny?
The idea that the nation was meant to spread to the pacific.
Secession
When Abe became president, southerners saw it as a threat. Delegates voted to remove SC from the union, followed by six more states, then four more states, becoming the confederate states of america. They had a provisional constitution.

said Slavery was needed during this time and that a wealthy/civilized society comes from labor of other people.
