Sound Waves and Light Waves
to take in or take up (the picture on the right shows black, a color that absorbs all light)
Absorption
the maximum displacement of a wave or the vibrating object from its undisturbed position.
Amplitude
the range of electromagnetic waves that vary from high-frequency gamma rays to low frequency radio waves.
Electromagnetic Spectrum
a transverse wave that involves disturbances in electric and magnetic fields that are perpendicular to each other. Electromagnetic waves can travel through a medium or a vacuum
Electromagnetic Wave
the number of wave cycles made in one second
Frequency
The colors of the Visible Spectrum can all be seen by the naked eye. Although they can all be seen, they do not all carry the same amount of energy.
How are colors of the Visible Spectrum similar and different to each other?
Sound waves are similar to other waves because, they all carry energy, have a frequency, a wavelength, and an amplitude. Sound waves are different from other waves, because, they carry sound through compressions and rarefactions (longitudinal waves) while light waves are transverse waves. Light waves slow down when they hit a solid, but sound waves speed up.
How are sound waves similar to, and different from, other types of waves?
Electromagnetic radiation that has a wavelength longer than visible light but shorter than microwaves
Infrared light
A wave in which the direction of the disturbances is parallel to the direction of travel of the wave
Longitudinal Wave
a substance through which something, such as a mechanical wave, is transmitted. Take this ocean waves are carried by water, so water would be the medium in this case.
Medium or Media
the light that is bounced off an object
Reflection
the act of energy being passed through a medium
Transmission
A wave in which the direction of the disturbances is perpendicular to the direction of travel of the wave.
Transverse Wave
Electromagnetic radiation that has a wavelength shorter than visible light, but longer than X-rays.
Ultraviolet
the part of the electromagnetic spectrum that is visible to the human eye and is perceived as light. (the rainbow)
Visible light Spectrum
moves through the air and carries energy
Wave
the distance between two consecutive points in a wave that are moving in the same way.
Wavelength
There are many characteristics of electromagnetic waves. There are Microwaves, Gamma Rays, X-rays, Ultraviolet light, Visible Light, Radio Waves, Infrared light.
What are the characteristics of electromagnetic waves?
Hertz (Hz) 1 Hz is equal to one wave cycle per second.
What is Frequency measured in? and what is one of that measurement equal to?
They have an inverse relationship, the longer the wavelength, the lower the frequency, the smaller the wavelength, the higher the frequency.
what is the relationship between wavelength and frequency?
