A discovery?

Many learn from an early age that the year 1492 is the date of the "discovery of America" or Christopher Columbus "discovered" America in that year. But keep in mind that this event is a discovery only from the European POV. Many Indians and Latin Americans do not like the term discovery. For them, the arrival of Europeans poses no discovery of the American continent, as Indians lived there for many centuries. From the perspective of an American person, Europeans who came invaded and conquered the native land of the Indians. So, instead of talking about the "discovery of America in 1492," speaking of the "encounter" of two worlds : the European world and the American Indian.
