Mass

The amount of matter an object has. Measured by a balance.

Volume

The amount of space an object takes up.

The volume of this state of matter can change

gas

the state of matter with no definite volume and no definite shape

gas

Deposition

gas to solid

freezing

Liquid to Solid

Liquid to gas at the surface (any temperature)

evaporation

Weight

A measure of the effect of gravity acting on an object's mass.

Crystalline Solid

A solid that has molecules and atoms arranged in a repeating pattern

Amorphic Solid

A solid where molecules and atoms have no special arrangement. e.g. plastic, rubber, wood

Matter

Anything that has mass and takes up space.

Endothermic

Energy is added or absorbed by a substance (absorbing heat)

Exothermic

Energy is removed or taken out of a substance (release of heat)

Two types of Vaporization

Evaporating and Boiling

Condensation

Gas to Liquid

How would you describe the particles in a gas

Particles moving very fast and freely (have overcome attraction). No intermolecular attraction.

Physical Properties

Physical properties can be observed or measured without changing the composition of matter.

How do you describe the particles in a solid?

Strong attraction between particles. Locked tightly together (touching) and vibrate.

How do you describe the particles in a liquid

Weaker attraction between particles(still touching) but allows particle to slide past each other

Physical Change

When matter changes its form or shape.

the state of matter with a definite volume but no definite shape

liquid

Boiling

liquid changing to a gas under the surface and at a specific temperature

solid to liquid

melting

This state of matter holds its shape when placed in different size containers

solid

the state of matter with a definite volume and definite shape

solid

Sublimation

solid to gas

states of matter (common)

solid, liquid, and gas
